Swiss Travel Pass Flex right for my 11-day trip?

Short summary – read this first

Maureen B is traveling to Switzerland for 11 days starting June 20th and is seeking advice on which rail pass to buy as her travel days are not consecutive. She considers options like the 4-day flex pass and the Swiss Travel Pass, especially for her trips to Bern, Zermatt, and Lucerne.

Key takeaways:
  • For your travel days across Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass is a great choice as it provides unlimited travel on trains, buses, and boats.
  • Consider buying the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass since the price difference from the 8-day pass is small and will cover your entire stay better.
  • Remember that the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland only works in that specific area, so it won't help in Zermatt.

    Hi Maureen55,

I understand you, choosing the right Swiss rail pass is often a bit difficult. We have a guide here, have you already seen that?

While you are in Zermatt, Interlaken and Lucerne – do you plan to do mountain trips? Those also count as traveling. This a very important point to be able to help you more.

Yes, I’ll be going to in Zermatt – Gornegrat, Riffleburg, Sunnessa. In Interlacken will be going to Shynige Platte, Lauterbrunnen, Grundelwald, Wegen, Jungfrau, both lakes, not Matterhorn

I see. In this case, you are also travelling on the other days, so you would need a pass on those days too.

As you are travelling in the whole of Switzerland, I recommend the Swiss Travel Pass for you (not the Flex version, but the ‘normal’). Check the validity list and map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass.

With the Swiss Travel Pass, you get free unlimited travel by trains, buses, boats and city transport. Cable cars, cogwheel trains and funiculars are usually discounted by 50% with that pass.

If you would like to estimate your costs, use our calculation spreadsheet, you can download it from here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

As there is not a big difference in price between the 8 and 15 days long Swiss Travel Pass, I recommend the 15 days. Another option is that you are getting the 8 days one, and you pay separately for the first and last day trips + one more day (the 8 days should be consecutive days). But this will be more expensive in total as the 15 days pass.

Ok I will look into this thank you very much. Which is less expensive the SBB train pass or should I use the Oberland train pass? Again thank you for being so helpful with me and your assistance

We are glad to help. 🙂

You could also use the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland, but that is only valid in the Bernese Oberland.

Zermatt is out of this region, so you cannot use it there. This is the reason, I recmmended you the Swiss Travel Pass, as it is valid in the whole country.
