Switzerland in early April: low elevation walks with green pastures?

Short summary – read this first

Matheus is planning his first international trip to Switzerland for 4 days, from April 6th to 10th, as part of a 14-day European adventure. He seeks advice on green, low-elevation areas suitable for walking and light hiking, avoiding snow due to recent injuries. He's considering Lauterbrunnen but wants to confirm if it's a good choice given the spring weather.

Key takeaways:
  • Lauterbrunnen is a great option for a green experience with its scenic walking trails, like the Lauterbrunnen-Stechelburg walk.
  • Staying in Lucerne is also recommended, offering access to lovely walks and potentially Mount Rigi, but be sure to check local weather conditions and trail availability upon arrival.
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast, as April can bring sudden changes that might affect your plans.

    Hello everyone 🙂

I’m Matheus, and it’s my first post here as I’ve learned about the community around a month ago, when I’ve deciced to do my first Europe trip (first international trip at all, actually) and then started researching and learning.

I’d like to kindly ask for an insight about Switzerland — in which I’ll be starying 4 days of my 14 days trip (will arrive from Paris/Amsterdam by train and then take off to Lisbon to visit a friend).

I had to pick a suitable window in accord to my work’s projects milestones, so, it’s gonna be 31st March → 14th April (on Switzerland from 6th to 10th April) and, as per my researches, that turned out to be a very rough window (due to a possible late spring and an unpredictable weather) to what I’d like to do and see in this firtst swiss visit: walk the entire day for the landscapes, do a little hiking if trails are open, and see as much green as I can. I’m not very fond of snow and I’m currently recovering from an ACL/meniscus injuries until October next year, so, definitely won’t be doing any wild activity up in the mountains/snow (paragliding, skiing, etc.), so it’s all really about walking and seeing things (as it seems tobogganing won’t be an option either as they’ll be closed).

Given this context, the insight I’d be looking for is: which would be a good green, low elevation place for me to stay on those 4 days? Really don’t mind a little snow, and I do have my expectations straight and know that, being still early spring, it won’t be a very green window. I’m just afraid everything would be fully covered in snow. With a very heavy heart, I’ve already cut out places like Grindewald, Engelberg, Wengen and Murren as those should be fully white at that point, but it seems that my dream place should be in spring already: Lauterbrunnen (hoping it would look like this spring walk video I’ve found: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYUF4CseB3w).

With the knowledge I jave so far, my hint would be to stay based on Luzern, and then I can visit the other places from there. Would prefer to stay in a village though, just need to find a green one first 😀

Thank you very much for your time and valuable insights folks.

    Hi MatheusR,

    Very welcome to MySwissAlps.

Thanks for sharing your plans.  April time can be a lovely time to enjoy Switzerland but you are right, you’ll need to choose carefully if you are wanting to hike, as many trails are still closed and covered in snow from the winter season.  Also the weather can be very changeable in April so do check the weather forecast before heading out.

That said, Lauterbrunnen would be a good choice, a small village too.  There’s the Lauterbrunnen-Stechelburg walk that can be enjoyed in April (see link below).  I’ve also included our handy travel guide to Lauterbrunnen – full of useful information, things to do, how to get around, accommodation suggestions aswell.

Lucerne is another good choice, albeit a larger town but you can still find some lovely walks in the area. You may even be able to visit Mount Rigi, just check when you arrive.  In the meantime, additional ideas can be found below:

I hope this gives you a few more ideas, do reach out if you have further questions.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
