Short summary – read this first

A traveler is seeking advice on train crowd levels during Christmas week in Switzerland. They want to know what to expect regarding train occupancy, especially in popular areas. They are looking for insights based on past experiences to better plan their trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect fewer passengers in low-traffic areas like Geneva and St-Gallen, but much higher in tourist spots like Interlaken and Lucerne.
  • Check the Swiss Rail timetable for occupancy rates, especially for routes like Zurich HB to Zermatt.
  • Consider traveling in 1st class, which is typically less crowded than 2nd class.
  • Use the advanced SBB timetable that shows real-time occupancy levels with red and black figures to assess potential crowding.

    Hi Bear 2019,

    Based on my experience:

    – Less passengers than normal in the low areas (Geneva – St-Gallen, BaselZurich, Olten – Chiasso, etc.)

    – (Much) more than normal in touristic areas (Interlaken, Lucerne, Montreux, etc.)

The Swiss Rail timetable ( http://www.sbb.ch/en/buying/pages/fahrplan/fahrplan.xhtml ) provides information on the occupancy rate of trains (not all of them, though) : check out for instance Zurich HB to Zermatt, and compare travel dates such as 10 December and 29 December.

    Hi Bear2019,

usually the 1st class is less crowded than the 2. class.

If you are worried about finding seats will be difficult, have a look at the timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable, use the advanced one, that will lead you to the SBB timetable. It shows the occupancy rate on the selected route with small red and black figures: 3 red figures mean “very high occupancy expected”. But even in this case you will find probably a seat after a while.

    Regards,

    Ildiko
