Using a Eurail Pass on the Glacier Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Woody3155 is planning a 15-day trip and wants to take the Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz using their Eurail Pass. They encountered issues booking a seat reservation online due to unavailability and are seeking alternatives for booking or other routes to enjoy the scenery.

Key takeaways:
  • You can book Glacier Express seats independently from the Eurail website, as reservations and passes are separate.
  • If you can't secure a seat on the Glacier Express, consider alternate routes like Zermatt to Visp to Zurich to Landquart for beautiful views.

We have a 15 day Eurail Pass. One of the trips we wish to do is Zermatt to St Moritz and I previously read that I could use our Eurail Pass and pay a surcharge to book.

When I try to book on the Eurail site this message comes up.

Seat reservations unavailable. It seems no price offer is available right now. It is possible that all pass holder seats are sold out. Please check ‘More information’ and try other ways to book this seat reservation, or buy a separate full fare ticket to board. You need to buy a seat reservation to board.

Is there another way to book using my pass? If we cannot use our pass on the Glacier Express is there a local train/trains that will take us along a similar route?

The only route I can seem to be able to book online from Zermatt to St Moritz takes me to Zermatt – Visp – Zuerich – Landquart – St Moritz.

Would this route take in most of the best sights?

Hi Woody3155, thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

Your understanding is correct: your Eurail Global Pass indeed covers the ride Glacier Express route, but you’ll have to pay for seat reservations (https://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass/validity). The pass and the seat reservations are entirely separate products. So you don’t have to use the Eurail website to book your seats, nor do you need your Eurail Global Pass while booking. As long as you can show both your pass as well as your reservation when asked for on board the train, you’re all set. You can book your Glacier Express seats through any of the options listed here: https://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/tickets.

The route via Zurich and Landquart is a different one. This is the Glacier Express route: https://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/gettingthere.
