Wengen to Grindelwald First and Murren in 1 day?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a June trip to Wengen with another couple in their early 60s. They want to visit the Grindelwald/First Cliff Walk and are curious about travel times and routes between Grindelwald and Murren on the same day. They need advice on how to manage the day efficiently.

Key takeaways:
  • Allocate half a day for visiting the First Cliff Walk to enjoy the scenery and have time left for Murren.
  • Travel from Wengen to Grindelwald either by train or via a cable car to Mannlichen, which both take about an hour.
  • To reach Murren from Grindelwald, take the train to Lauterbrunnen, switch to a funicular, then the mountain railway.
  • Consider using the SBB timetable for planning your journey and connections.

I am planning our June 2022 trip and will be staying in Wengen. We are 2 couples in our early 60’s. We want to go to the Grindelwald/First Cliff Walk but most likely won’t participate in the other activities. How much time do you think we will spend there just admiring the scenery – how long does it take to get up and down from the First Cliff Walk. We are also hoping to go to Murren on the same day – do you think that is possible and what is the best route to get from Wengen to Grindelwald/First, then to Murren, then back to Wengen? Thanks for input.

    Hi Heather CDN,

Wengen-Grindelwald First-Mürren is definitely do-able in 1 day if you don’t plan on doing any long hikes.

The First Cliff Walk is a fairly easy trail about 100 metres in length. You basically walk on a metal walkway that is built around a mountain cliff. There’s a viewing platform at the end and also a restaurant with a big terrace overlooking the beautiful surrounding mountainscapes. I think allocating half day for this trip is sufficient. So you’ll have the rest of the day to explore Mürren.

There are a two options to travel from Wengen to Grindelwald. 1 – Take the train to Grindelwald and then walk or take the bus to the Firstbahn cable car station. 2 – In Wengen take the cable car to Mannlichen, then the gondola down to Grindelwald Terminal and then train to Grindelwald/ Firstbahn cable car station. Both journeys take about 1 hour.

To get to Mürren from Grindelwald, you will need to travel by train to Lauterbrunnen and switch to the funicular to Grutschalp, then take the mountain railway to Mürren. You can find more infomation about how to get to Mürren here: https://www.myswissalps.com/murren/travel.

For all your trips, you can use the SBB timetable to choose your connections and plan your journeys.
