Where to stay in the Bernese Oberland – Interlaken or elsewhere?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a long trip to Switzerland, specifically 10 days in the Bernese Oberland and visits to Zermatt and Interlaken. They are looking for a base with character near rail services for exploring the area.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider Wengen as your base since it offers great mountain views and easy access to transport.
  • If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, traveling around will be more convenient, as you can simply scan it on your phone.
  • Explore other beautiful villages like Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald for a different mountain experience.
  • Check out the trip report section on the forum for personal insights from other travelers.

Hi:  We are planing a long trip to Switzerland.  Planning on doing 10 days in the Bernese Oberland area and also doing Zermatt area.  We also want to do a number of days in the Interlaken area to do Harder Klum, Brienze Rathorn, Thun and Thun Castle, Kanderstag, Spiez, Meringen, St. Beatus Caves and the two lakes.  While Interlaken hotels are an option, is there a “better” place to use as a base that has more character yet still has easy access to rail services.  Thank you.

Hi Fitznh, I imagine you will get a LOT of recommendations and simply you can’t really go wrong with any of them.  My wife and I used Wengen as our base this past Summer and found it worked great for us.  If you have the Swiss Travel Pass (STP), everything is so much easier by just scanning it on your mobile phone.  While we did not stay in the Hotel Bellevue in Wengen we received great feedback that this was an excellent hotel.  I encourage you to visit this forum’s trip report section and you will get great feedback (including ours) on a host of places to stay, things to see and what to watch out for.  Best wishes for your 2024 trip.

    Hi Fitznh,

There are lots of bases in the Bernese Oberland that you really can’t go wrong with.  Based on the places you are intending to visit, Interlaken is central and boasts good transport connections to the rest of the region and to Zermatt.  That said, you are never far from transportation in Switzerland.

Perhaps have a think if you would maybe also like to experience staying in the mountains, then Wengen as mentioned by Swede4life would be a nice option.  Other options in this area are Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. These are both lower down in the Jungfrau valley.

I agree, have a read of the trip reports on the forum.  These will give personal insights by travellers too.

In the meantime, here is our Bernese Oberland guide for you to browse through, lots of useful information and all above places are included for you to research:

I’ll also enclose our guide to Zermatt:

Happy reading/researching.  Any questions, do reach out.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thanks for the advice. We were planning to stay in Wengen anyway. Did a week there 6 yrs ago.  Rethinking just extending stay in Wengen and no move again.  Thank you.
