Which Swiss rail pass for my child to travel free?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland from September 5-12, visiting Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, and Zermatt. They want to know if a 4-day Swiss Travel Pass Flex and a 3-day Berner Oberland Pass will provide discounts and whether their son can travel for free with these passes. They are looking for clear advice on the best pass options for their itinerary.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase a Swiss Travel Pass to qualify for the Swiss Family Card, allowing free travel for children aged 6-15 with an adult.
  • If using the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass, children need a specific child pass or can also travel free with the Swiss Family Card.
  • To get discounts on the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Pass, make sure to use a day from the Swiss Travel Pass Flex on those travel days.

    Hello Mia0206,

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex or Swiss Half Fare Card, all children between 6 and 15 years old would travel free with you by applying for the Swiss Family Card.

With none of the passes per the above to qualify for a Swiss Family Card and you just had an adult Saver Day Pass, your child would not travel for free – they would need to purchase a Day Pass Children.

If you had a Berner Oberland Pass, they would need a child’s Berner Oberland Pass for CHF30 to travel for free with you or they can travel free with you on the Swiss Family Card.

If you had the Jungfrau Travel Pass, your child would need a Jungfrau Travel Pass for children at CHF30 for them to travel free. The Swiss Family Card is not valid.

Respective discounts do apply for the Berner Oberland Pass and the Jungfrau Travel Passes if you had a Swiss Travel Flex but only if a travel day of the Swiss Travel Pass Flex is being used on each day of the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass.

I hope all is clear, if you have any questions, do feel free to ask. I know it can all be a little confusing!

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
