A couple is planning a trek from Eiger to Matterhorn through Lauterbrunnen, Mürren, Griesalp, Kandersteg, Leukerbad, and Zermatt in July. They are looking for advice on wild camping along the route, especially as they want to save money on hotels. It's noted that camping above the tree line is allowed in Switzerland.
Key takeaways:
Wild camping is allowed above the tree line, but check specific regulations for each area you visit.
Wild camping is strictly forbidden in Zermatt, so be sure to consult local authorities for other regions.
Consider staying at mountain huts, which can be booked online and offer basic accommodations.

We are a couple who are going to trek from Eiger to Matterhorn via lauteebrunnen , Mürren, griesalp, kandersteg, leukerbad, zermatt in July 🙂 . Have been wanting to do this for a long time.
We were wonderingtwondering what is the possibility to wild camping along the route…I can see some camping spots around grindelwald and lauteebrunnen , but that’s about it.
We can not afford hotels in Switzerlandr for sure, last I knew camping about the tree line for a night was allowed right?

My wife and I were thinking to take a similar route in August, without going to Zermatt and Matterhorn. Did you come across some specific information about where you can wild camping in the municipalities that you have mentioned?
If you would have liked we can also exchange information.
Nice to hear you’re also planning on some hiking and camping in Switzerland!

Happy planning and get back to us anytime for input.
Thank you so much for the detailed and quick reply. ☺️😊 It was certainly helpful and gave us better understanding of the regions we are stopping along the way.
would you know happen to know where I can find out about location of huts in the regions I mentioned?.
And also the regulations of the communities about wild camping in the regions we are going to ? Should we get in touch with them or so on? Or is wild camping really frowned upon in this region?
I’m not too sure if the same applies in the other regions you are visiting. You should check with the respective local authorities. Some may allow it and some will recommend you to stay in a campsite instead. If you are interested in staying in mountain huts, The Swiss Alpine Club (SAC) has an extensive list on their website, some of which you can book directly online. Most huts have basic but comfortable furnishings mainly in dormitory set-up or multi-bed rooms.
Hope that helps!
Regards,
Anna
