Advice for Gornergrat, Riffelsee, Riffelberg-Furi gondolas, Stellisee

Short summary – read this first

Mikhail is planning his trip to Zermatt and is looking for activities and travel advice. He wants to know about hopping on and off the train to Gornergrat, visiting Riffelsee lake, and walking to Lake Stellisee. He also asks about a shortcut to Matterhorn Paradise and any discounts available with the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:

You can hop on and off the cogwheel train to Gornergrat at any station, and a roundtrip ticket is valid for one day. To visit Riffelsee lake, get off at Rotenboden and follow the trail; it’s recommended to also take the returned train to get back. The Riffelberg Express cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise offers discounts with the Swiss Travel Pass. For Lake Stellisee, take the funicular to Sunnegga and then a cable car to Blauherd; it's about a 20-minute walk from there.

    Hi,

I’d like to get some information about Zermatt activities.

    1. During travelling to/from Gornergrat by train am I allowed to hop-on/hop-off at every station?
    2. What is the closest station to visit Riffelsee lake and how long does it take to make a return route?
    3. Video on MySwissAlps shows shortcut between Riffleberg station and Furi cable car station to Matterhorn paradise. It is stated that this shortcut allows you to do travel to Gornergrat and to Matterhorn paradise in one day. Not that I am keen to do these activities in one day, but it might be a necessity, if weather window is too small. Could you, please Ā provide some information about this shortcut? What does it include? Does it have a discount with Swiss Travel Pass?
    4. Walking to Lake Stellisee. What is the nearest starting point? Zermatt? How long does it take to make a return route?

    Thank you in advance,

    Mikhail.

    Hi Mikhail,

A roundtrip cogwheel train ticket to Gornergrat (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/gornergrat/) is valid for 1 day and it does allow you to hop-on and hop off at any stations in between.

If you wish to visit the Riffelsee lake, we recommend to get down at Rotenboden (one stop before Gornergrat Kulm) and follow the trail to the lake: https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/hike-rotenboden-riffelalp/. You can continue to Riffelalp or return to Rotenboden and take the cogwheel train back down.

The Riffelberg Express is a cable car that runs from Riffelberg to Furi, from where you can take a cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise or conitnue down to Zermatt. Please note the Riffelberg Express runs on a seasonal schedule (usually available in winter and peak summer period only). The ticket is discounted if you have a Swiss Travel Pass. Further details here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/matterhorn/#directions

To get to Stellisee, first take the funicular to Sunnegga, then the cable car to Blauherd (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/sunnegga-rothorn/). In Blauherd, follow the sign to Stellisee – it’s about 20 mins walk along a well-marked path.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,
    Anna
