Zermatt to Chur – avoid Glacier Express route

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, EloBay, is planning their first trip to Switzerland and needs help finalizing their itinerary. They want to travel from Zermatt to Chur on March 7, making stops in Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Schilthorn, and Murren. EloBay is unsure if this packed schedule is feasible in one day without a strict timeline to Chur.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the SBB timetable to plan your journey and check travel times accurately.
  • Zermatt to Chur via several stops can take around 9 hours with many changes, so you may want to reconsider.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass covers the fast train connections, so it’s a good option for traveling between major cities.

Hello….this is my first time posting so bear with me.

I have been reading up on numerous posts and your suggestions and need your help in finalizing my itinerary. I need to get to Chur from Zermatt on 03-07-2018 and was thinking of going thru Interlaken-Lauterbrunnen-Schilthorn-Murren and back down to Lauterbrunnen and finally train to Chur. Do you think this is feasible in one day? I have no time schedule to get to Chur; just staying overnight to catch BEX in the morning.

    Thanks

Hello EloBay and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Sounds like a long day. You should use the SBB timetable to figure out how long the trip will take.

If you include via Kandersteg then between Zermatt and Interlaken then between Brig and Spiez you will travel on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train over the traditional, more than 100 year old mountain route, giving you a wonderful view along the impressive peaks and down into the Rhone Valley. The 1-hour faster route via Visp takes you through the fairly lengthy Lötschberg Base Tunnel with rather limited views.

Too much for one day I would say, you might start to not enjoy the day due to fatigue etc

Thank you for your input. I have looked into the route suggested and I think I might try it instead. I just wanted to break up the long train ride from Zermatt to Chur with some stops along the way and visit some more of Switzerland. Do you think I can maybe make a stop along the way for a short visit maybe Bern or some other suggestion?

Zermatt to Chur via Kandersteg and Interlaken is about a 9 hour train journey with 5 to 6 changes and no stopovers. Is that what you reall want to do?

Zermatt to Chur on the GEX is 5:34!

I was wondering if you could help me again….I am having trouble understanding something. What is the name/railway of the fast train from Lugano to Zurich HB? Is it included in the Swiss Travel Pass?

It’s just a regular train – no special name. Just put Lugano to Zurich HB in your SBB timetable search and it will show you the fastest connections.

Yes it is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

Perfect; just wanted to make sure. I’ll be taking the BEX train and bus to Lugano then wanted to take that fast train that I read about in one of the threads. Easy to tour Lugano for a little while before taking train to Zurich? Any suggestions on what to do or see in Lugano?

You probably won’t have much time. Just take the funicular from Lugano Station down to city centre walk down to the lake. Take a stroll along the waterfront.

Wow that was amazing…..so very informative. The pictures were great too. Too bad we don’t have more time; would have been very nice to have stayed a day or two in Lugano. Printed it out and taking with me to read on the our long flight to Zurich from Florida. Thank you so much for sharing.
