Short summary – read this first

Ronnie is planning a trip to Zermatt and Grindelwald from October 14-16, wanting to explore Jungfrau and First. He has a Eurail pass and is seeking advice on the best train routes and whether reservations are needed for his travels.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the Swiss railways timetable for direct train routes and connections.
  • No reservations are required for Jungfrau or First in October.
  • Traveling from Grindelwald to Lörrach via Bern is the most direct route, while via Lucerne offers a more scenic experience.

Hi there, We will be in Zermatt Oct. 14-16. Next is Grindelwald for 2 nights. Wish to go up Jungfrau and First. We have a Eurail pass. Which trains are best to take and do we need any reservations to for this time period? From Grindelwald we wish to take the train to Lorrach, Germany. Do you know the best route?

    Thanks for your assistance,

    Ronnie

    Hi Ronnie,

The Swiss railways timetable will give you the direct routes to any mountain or town and how to make connections between trains or cable cars as needed: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

No reservations are possible to First or needed to Jungfraujoch in October.

When traveling from Grindelwald to Lörrach, what is the best route for you? Fastest? Most scenic? The timetable gives you the most direct route by default (via Bern). Going via Lucerne would be more scenic.

Grindelwald – Basel via Luzern is arguably only marginally more scenic than going via Bern

Interestingly my last point has just been backed up by a post on another thread where the traveller was less than wow-ed by the Interlaken – Luzern route

The point is that Interlaken – Luzern is via a comparitively minor, low altitude pass route (Brünig) and the most scenic section is comparitively short, as well as there being quite a bit of forest along the way.
