5 days Wengen, 5 days Mürren – which pass?

We will train from Zurich to Wengen and stay 5 nights in Wengen. We will then stay in Murren for 5 nights. We plan to hike and use transport in both areas for all 10 days including going up the Jungfraujoch. We will then train back to Zurich. What is the best travel pass to use for our journey? Would it cover trains, cablecars and buses in the Wengen/Murren area?

    Thank you.

    Mr Rikkie

Wengen and Murren are less than 40 minutes from each other – are you sure you want to stay in both? Also 10 days is quite a long time to spend in such a small area.

However if you do, you will only need a Berner Oberland Pass, and a normal ticket from and too Zurich.

    Hi Mr Rikkie,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

    When are you planning travel?

In addition to the Regional Pass Berner Oberland as suggested by 1960man, you might also want to consider the Jungfrau Travel Pass. You can find all the details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrautravelpass

You can compare the cost of using the passes in a few simple steps here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass

    Regards,

    Anna

    Thank you for your help.

    Hi Mr Rikkie,

thanks for your answer. Yes, in this case I also recommend the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland (http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/) – just as Anna wrote.

You can also have a look at the Jungfrau Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrautravelpass.

Make sure to check the prices and also the validity maps of those passes. You can find all of the information on the tabs on those pages. If you already know your itinerary (mountain tops included), you can compare the options with the help of this calculation spreadsheet: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

Wengen and Mürren are very close to each other. You can find accommodation here: http://www.myswissalps.com/wengen/hotels and http://www.myswissalps.com/murren/hotels.

    Hi Rikkie,

We stayed in both places Wengen (4N) and Murren (3N) in 2017 and used the Jungfrau Travel Pass (bought with a Half Fare card) which was very convenient. There are quite a few activities and hikes in Murren so staying there is also a good idea as it cuts down the travelling from Wengen. Also the area around Wengen has many hikes which makes it an ideal base as well. Being the kind of travellers who prefer to take our time without rushing about, I personally feel it’s a good idea to be based in both places if you can afford the time especially if there are many things you wish to do around there. Knowing the weather can be changeable, it’s good to have some leeway when we have more days.

But I do understand some may not be able to afford so many days, so you are most fortunate to be able to do so.

I assume you have down your homework about what places you intend to visit. These are what we did which I would highly recommend in Murren which we did:

    1) The long walk down to Gimmelwald. (Down is much easier rather uphill) for a stroll. Then the cable car up to Birg to do the Thrill Walk. This is a highlight not to be missed as the impressive gorgeous views overlooking the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. As you walk out on the bridge hugging the place, it’s lovely. it’s Way better than the one at Grindelwald First. The cafe there is a nice spot to chill out. After the experience, you can take the cablecard from Brig down to Murren.

    2) For the walk to Lauterbrunnen – the direction towards Stechelberg is better as the views of the alps are in front of you. Then you can take the cablecar from Stechelberg back up to Murren.

    3) The Allmendhubel area is also fine. If you are avid hikers, there will be much for you to do.

We stayed at Hotel Alpenblick – they have renovated the rooms and it’s a good location and reasonably priced. Nice hosts and you must try their fried chicken specialty. We enjoyed hanging out at the outdoor cafes in the area…absolute bliss as the weather was very cool. Hope you won’t have a very July hot summer as most places do not have an aircon.

As for Wengen – Our last visit to Wengen was in Sept 2017 and 2012 and will be returning next year 2023 mid June. We just can’t get enough of the place as it’s so incredibly beautiful. There was still some snow on the peaks and it’s always very nice to have that scenery.

    1) The Panoramic Walk from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is not to be missed. This direction is better as the alps are in front of you during the walk.

As for Mannlichen, on our last day, the webcam showed that it was cloudy but we took a chance and went up since we had one more day of the Pass that could be used. Once the gondola broke broke through the clouds and we reached the top, we felt like we were in heaven! We were on top looking down at the clouds below us and it was truly such a glorious sight. Forever etched in our memories.

    2) The long cablecar ride from Mannlichen to Grindelwald Grund is very pleasant.

In our trip next year, we will try the Eiger Express at the Grindelwald Terminal to Eigergletscher and hopefully walk down to Kleine Scheidegg. It’s something new so I can’t comment on the experience as yet.

We plan to do more walks in Wengen on our trip next year. We already did the Jungfrau so we will skip it this time round. The train from Wengen to Jungfrau is really great (on the right side going up).

We stayed at Hotel Alpenrose the last 2 trips and will do so again next year. Love the swiss alpine feel of the hotel and the affordable half board breakfast/dinner. Good wifi signal.

The Grindelwald First cablecar is a very nice long ride up. We weren’t very excited about Grindelwald as it’s much more commercial than quaint Wengen and Murren. In 2017, they had a wonderful outdoor market which apparently only happens once a year in October. So glad we got to experience the stalls set up by the farmers, with food etc.

These are my trip reports to Wengen and Murren if you are interested. There are accompanying photos.

As to whether the Bernese Oberland Regional Pass is better than the Jungfrau Travel Pass – as Anna mentioned – you will need to do your calculations based on where you wish to go.

On a side note, the town of Appenzell and also the Engadin area is very very nice too. We stayed at a lovely valley called SILS IM MARIA. There are many mt places to visit from there as well. The Engadine card makes it more affordable to take the cable cars and rides in the entire regions. If you ever get the chance, take the horse carriage ride to the end of the FEX Valley (not covered by the Engadine card). If you prefer small scenic places to big cities, then these are places not to be missed. The scenic train ride on the Bernina Pass to Alp Grum Tirano is very nice.

All the best with your planning.😁
