Dear Team, we are planning to visit Interlaken for two days. The first day we plan to do Jungfraujoch and on the second day we would like to visit Beatus caves and Trummelbach falls. We want to take the evening train to Lucerne. Wanted your advice on whether it would be possible to see and experience Beatus and Trummelbach in a single day. Kindly advise,

    With regards, Saravana

That should work, with some attention to detail.

There is a 20 minute bus ride to the caves from I. Ost, once per hour. Looks like the route goes past I. West. It is probably 5 km from there.

The caves are open from 0930 till 1700. Guided tours take 75 minutes, every 45 minutes.

I have not been close to either attraction, so I don’t know the times required at each place to get organized.

I think I wold spend some time with the bus and train timetables, as well as the opening hours, to figure out exactly how much time it would take to get there, walk around, and get back. I’d make sure to synchronize with bus and train schedules….sometimes service diminishes during lunch hours.

It looks like about 45 minutes from I.O. to the bus stop for the Trummelbach falls

I think it would be a a nice day but I’d keep close watch on the times. After all, you’ve got a couple of hours on the train to Luzern. It looks like the 1804 might be the last train with a restaurant car.

You can leave your luggage at the train station….if you don’t wait until too late to retrieve it. Note the opening hours at the luggage office.

    Hello Saravana!

There are many alternatives near Interlaken. Please check http://www.myswissalps.com/be rneseoberland/activiti es for tips. You may also like local viewing points like Harder Kulm and Schynige Platte.

If weather is good, you may want to combine your visit to the Trümmelbach falls with a round trip Lauterbrunnen-Grütschalp-Mürren-Stechelberg (http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn/gettingthere) and a hike from Stechelberg to Lauterbrunnen (http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/lauterbrunnen-stechelberg), rather than visiting the indoor Beatus caves.

If the weather is good, that scenery is spectacular and worth spending time in it — outdoors.

Schynige Platte would give you a different point of view and let you see the lake from above.

    http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/schynigeplatte

The Mürren trip would give you great views of where you were the day before, assuming you had good weather and were able to go up to the Jungfraujoch.

I do not know how much space there is for left luggage at Wilderswil.

So, I checked – left luggage is open until 1750. Opens at 0700. Closed over lunch 1145-1315.

    Hi Saravana,

The trip from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg as described takes about one hour. Alternatively, you can hike from Grütschalp to Mürren, instead of taking the local train. It’s an easy trail at the slope above the Lauterbrunnen valley, with beautiful views: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/gruetschalp-muerren.

We would be visiting Interlaken by 14 Oct 2015, how is generally the weather in October, will it be very cold or manageable with some layers if we go for a hike. Thanks for the support – Saravana

    Should have mentioned –

The best way to make those judgements is to look at a map and the rail timetable togetether.

    Maps –

    http://www.swisstopo.admin.ch /internet/swisstopo/en /home.html

    map.classic.search.ch/

Once you see all the stations on a map, you get an idea of the distances involved. and the choices that can be made at Lauterbrunnen.

    Timetable –

    http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.htm l

That link gives you a “via” entry box from the very start.

For Schynige Platte, look at stations Schynige Platte, or either Interlaken East or West or Wilderswil depending on your preference. 52 minutes from Wilderswil.. Trains are every 40 minutes. There are some very scenic trails up around the top of the mountain. Some are narrow. Be careful.

Fpr the walk in the valley+ Mürren – your round trip will start from Lauterbrunnen and go either way around the loop – Trummelbach – Stechelberg -Gimmelwald- Mürreb- Grütschalp – Lauterbrunnen.

Hear is part of it –

    http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/gruetschalp-muerren

and this link gets you to various discussions about the Trummelbach falls.

    http://www.myswissalps.com/se arch?q=trummelbach

    such as –

    http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/walking-from-lauterbrunnen-to-trummelbach

If all you did was ride the public transport around the loop without stopping for a look at anything, you would use less than an hour on that loop. The connections are reasonably well synchronized. Don’t dawdle at Gimmelwald.

The weather – temperature and clouds – vary substantially by altltude.

    http://www.holiday-weather.com/wengen_ch/ averages/

Wengen is colder than Lauterbrunnen –

    http://www.worldweatheronline .com/Lauterbrunnen-weather-averages/CH.aspx

That date for your trip is at the end of the summer season or perhaps between-seasons. There is a chance that trails above about 1500 to 2000 meters will be closed due to snow.

Check availability of hotels and lifts for high mountains. Some are closed for maintenance then.

Lower altitudes will be fine. It will be a lucky day if you do not need a jacket and a layer or two, even at low altitude.

    Dear Slowpoke,

Thanks for the detailed information. Can I still plan for Jungfraujoch or should I have contingency even for the same. With regards, Saravana

Check the timetable information for your dat.

You will see that the trains run every day of the year.

If it is cloudy there is not as much point in going up there. That is a very expensive trip and I would like ti see the mountain scenery if I were up there.

The ticket stations and tourist offices have the current weather stataus. Check before you buy your tickets.

It always wise t have a contingency and have more than one day available for that trip. Be flexible.
