Hi everyone, I have tried my best to understand which would be the best way to get around Lucerne for our holiday in July but I am getting confused and I’m really unsure. To help you, here is our itinerary below for which we want to visit – please let me know if I should change some things around 🙂

    Friday:

Zurich Airport to Lucerne around 4pm

    Go see the Lion monument

    Kapellbrücke / chapel bridge

    Saturday

    Cog wheel train to Pilatus

Cable car – is this Pilatus area?

    Sunday

    Half day in Rigi mountain

    Cruise on Lake Lucerne

    Monday

Train from Lucerne to Zurich Airport. We may want to get off at Zurich main train station to have a walk around the city centre before getting train to the airport for 4pm.

Hello welshwizard and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Have a look at these links (and check out the various tabs):

I would strongly suggest you have a look at the Tell Pass Summer (http://www.myswissalps.com/te llpass). Just about everything you want to do is covered. All you will need is a ticket between Zurich Airport and Zug (closest town to Zurich covered by Tell Pass) and return.

Thank you for replying. Does the pass include the cog trains? Are these worth doing?

based on my itinerary, would I need only a 2 day pass for Saturday and Sunday? And buy train tickets to airport separately to save costs? Or do I need 4 day tell pass?

last question 🙂 for excursions – such as the mountains and lake Lucerne, do I need to buy these in advance as they may sell out in July?

I love that name welshwizard. My wife has some Welsh heritage.

Based on the plans you described a 2-day Tell Pass would work for you I think.

The Golden Round Trip – Lucerne, Kriens, Pilatus, Alpnachstad and boat back to Lucerne is a cracker. Don’t miss it. You can do it in reverse of course.

Rigi I found OK but next time would go for Titlis I think. Everyone has their favourites.

“Yer pays yer money and yer takes yer choices” I think they say.

Fantastic! Whereabouts? I am from Cardiff.

Yes i think 2 days would work as the first and last day we may walk around locally but won’t be going too far from where we will be based which is why i was looking at the Lion Monument for example on Friday. I will probably add the “City Ticket” for Zurich on our last day (Monday) so we can travel around the city as part of train ticket from Zurich – Lucerne – Zurich.

The Golden Round Trip you talk about – is that a separate ticket or can this journey be completed through the Tell Pass and completing the journey independently? Based on the locations you said i see the Tell Pass covers all of these except for the cog trains? Are Cog train tickets available on the day?

I am wondering if there is anything i should also be checking out whilst i am in the area?

Thank you for your help, it really is appreciated !

My wife’s Welsh heritage consists of her father being born near Cardiff. But she was born in Yorkshire.

The Golden Round Trip is described here http://www.myswissalps.com/pi latus/gettingthere. Free with Tell Pass and self guided. You’ll need to show your Pass at Kriens or Alpnacnstad to get a magnetic ticket for the trips up and down the mountain.

All cog wheels are covered by the Tell Pass. Did you look at the map here http://www.myswissalps.com/te llpass/validity?

Other things? There is a very sleek new ferry shuttle feeding the posh new resort of Bürgenstock. Hammetscwand Lift is nearby. Both on my bucket list.
