Hello, We are traveling mid – June from Lucerne to Interlaken Ost by train. We are Going to go from Zurich > Lucerne > Interlaken> Lauterbrunnen > Murren and then the trip in reverse except ending up in MILAN on the way back vs Zurich. Is it better to get a Swiss Rail Pass for each of the 3 members in our family? If we do, do we still need to make train reservations? Also how do we find a PANORAMIC train if possible, and first-class seats if possible? We just want VIEWS on the way there and back and are wondering the best way to make that trip wonderful without being crazy expensive. We are trying to figure out if it is better to buy Swiss Rail Passes for that week or to piece it together with train reservations. We don’t know how to find out what the train is like between the two towns and how to do panoramic if at all between those locales. Thanks!

    Hi LisaGH,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

How long is your trip? If you’re travelling more than 3 days, a multiple-day railpass is usually recommended. Based on your plans, the Swiss Travel Pass might be a good option. This pass provides free unlimited rides on all public transport (train, boats, bus) and discounts up to 50% on most mountain excursions. The Swiss Travel Pass is also also valid on all panoramic trains such as the Golden Pass, Glacier Express and Bernina Express. You can find more details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass

If you wish to include a panoramic train ride into your itinerary, you can simply take the Luzern-Interlaken Express train from Lucerne to Interlaken Ost. This train is part of the Golden Pass route as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere. Then on the way to Milan, you can take the Gotthard Panorama Express train from Lucerne to Lugano. In Lugano there are regular services to Milan. You can find more information about tickets and reservations in the following links:
