14-days Swiss itinerary by train and car in March

Short summary – read this first

Suzanna2180 is planning a 14-day trip to Switzerland from mid to late March. They want advice on their itinerary, which includes sledging, various towns in the Jungfrau region, a drive through Montreux, and activities in Zermatt. Tips on travel routes and accommodation choices would be appreciated.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient travel across Switzerland.
  • Reduce hotel changes by staying in one location within the Jungfrau region to save time.
  • Driving in the Montreux area isn't necessary as trains connect all key locations easily.
  • Be cautious with sledging, and check current conditions since Trümmelbach Falls will be closed in March.

Hi Suzanna2180 and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

So, first of all, be prepared for snow and winter: http://www.myswissalps.com/plantrip/clothing/winter and http://www.myswissalps.com/weather/winter.

Sledging is huge fun, but it can be also dangerous, so take care (http://www.myswissalps.com/activities/winter/snow).

Trümmelbach Falls will be closed, as they are only open from April.

I think it would be cheaper to travel further from Montreux to Geneva by train. Also then you do not need to pay for parking in Geneva. See more at http://www.myswissalps.com/carversustrain. Plus, the train trip from Montreux to Lausanne is wonderful.

Gstaad would be easier to visit from Montreux I think.

I think you could decrease the number of hotels so you do not loose time with checking in and out. For example Grindelwald, Mürren and Lauterbrunnen are close to each other. Why not spend the nights in the same hotels? You can find accommodation in the Jungfrau region here: http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrauregion/hotels and http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfrauregion/rentals.

Are you going to have a rail pass? I would recommend a Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass) for your trip or maybe a Swiss Half Fare Card (https://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard). To compare them you can use our spreadsheet at http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass. If you are not familiar with the timetable, then first read at http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

That’s all I’ve seen in your itinerary. Anyway, you’ve planned it very well!

I am going to add some links in your posts, you can also check them for more information on those cities and places.

    Take care,

    Ildiko

My comments on each segment of your itinerary:

Day 1 – Arr at Zurich airport noon, take a train to Grindelwald stay for the night.

Day 2 – Head to Bussalp (Sledging) .

Day 3 – Head to Trümmelbach Falls, Murren, and Wengen (if time allow) and stay at Murren for the night.

Day 4 – Head to Lauterbrunnen then to Interlaken for one night stay.

Days 1 -3 include Unnecessary duplication and back tracking: Take a careful look at a map of the Jungfrau area. This is a very small area geographically. All the well known villages are within 1 hour of each other. You can stay in one place and visit all the other from there, each place takes a minimum of half a day.

Day 5 – Take the Golden Pass train to Montreux. Upon arr at Montreux pick up rental car and drive to Geneva and stay for 2 nights.

Day 6 – Drive to Gstaad, then to Gruyeres, then to Lausanne.

Day 7 – Drive to Montreux. Check in Montreux hotel (1 night) and return car.

Day 5 – 7 Car completely unnecessary: all the places mentioned can be visited from each other and /or from one base town (eg Lausanne) – travel between each place takes between 40 mins and max 2 hours

Day 8 – Take the train from Montreux to Zermatt. Stay Zermatt for 3 nightks.

Day 9 & 10 – Klein Matterhorn, Gongergrat, Rothorn, Glacier Paradise

Day 9 – 10: Klein Matterhorn and ‘Glacier Paradise’ are the same thing; Rothorn (aka Sunegga) almost duplicate views as from Gornergrat; two of the three areas can be fitted in one day if neccessary (eg weather forecast bad for following day)

Day 11 – Take the Glacier Express to St Moritz stay for 3 nights.

Day 14 – Take train to Zurich.

    Day 15 &16 – Zurich

Day 17 – Fly home to Singapore.
