    We are planning a trip to Switzerland for July 2025 and I’d like some input on our planned destinations, given our time availability.

    We plan to have 4 days in Switzerland and would like to see Zermatt, Interlaken, Bern, and Lucerne.

    Can someone recommend an itinerary and best base camp (city) for this type of trip?

    Thank you!

    Assuming that these are the only places you are keen to see, Bern (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/bern/) is very well situated for ‘base camp’.  It takes nearly two-and-a-half hours to Zermatt  (change at Visp) just over an hour to Lucerne, and less than an hour to Interlaken.   Interlaken is a good alternative. Two hours to Lucerne on a scenic train.  Two-and-a-half-hours to  Zermatt (changes at Spiez and Visp.),   Spiez and Thun (both between Bern and Interlaken) are further possibilities.

    (In the 1990s I regularly had one week Swiss holidays using Bern as ‘Base Camp’.  Nowadays I stay in Zurich, as it is nearer to eastern Switzerland.)

    Hi Chris1140,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

    I agree with Roger to make Bern your base city for 4 days to avoid the hassle of checking-in and out of different hotels every day. The city is well positioned for day trips to Interlaken, Zermatt and Lucerne. You can use the Swiss timetable (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/) to check transport schedules and plan your day trips.

    You can find hotel option in Bern here: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/bern/#accommodation

    You can find further sightseeing tips in the following links;

    Zermatt: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/zermatt/

    Lucerne: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/lucerne/

    Interlaken: https://www.myswissalps.com/town/interlaken/

    Regards,

    Anna
