Seven day solo Switzerland trip in February

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Nandini7 is planning a 7-day solo trip from Zurich starting on February 24. She seeks advice on her itinerary, wondering if it's too busy, if she should add attractions like the Glacier Express, and whether the Swiss Travel Pass or the Swiss Half Fare Card is more economical for her plans.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider staying in one central location like Interlaken to streamline your travels and enjoy the Bernese Oberland region better.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass, especially the eight-day version, is a cost-effective option for accessing multiple sites and transportation in Switzerland.
  • Book accommodations quickly, as many places may fill up fast during winter.
  • Look into culinary tours that combine sightseeing with food experiences, especially since you're interested in chocolate.

Hi! After much research (on this website and others), I have come up with an itinerary of a 7 day holiday from Zurich. My start date is fixed, and I will be traveling solo. Would really appreciate if somebody can go through the itinerary and let me know if it is too tight, or if I should add certain must-sees that I missed out on, and any winter restrictions that I haven’t factored in.

    24th Feb:

Zurich – Old Town, Lake Zurich, Fraumunster Church, Bahnhofstrasse, Lindt Chocolate Factory (Rhine Falls?)

    25th Feb:

    Mt Titlis (+Snow Tubing)

Lucerne – Lake Lucerne, Lion Monument, Chapel Bridge

    26th Feb:

    Interlaken Lakes (Thun, Brienz)

    Grindelwald-First Cliff Walk/Flyer/Glider, Lake Bachalpsee

    27th Feb:

Jungfraujoch: Ice Palace, Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven, Snow Fun Park (will it be open?), Sphinx Observation Deck

    28th Feb:

    Zermatt:

Gornergrat/Matterhorn Ski Paradise (which is better?), Stargazing @ Gornergrat

    29th Feb:

Return to Zurich, Zurich Thermal Bath

    Should I add:

    1. Glacier Express to St. Moritz (it will increase my itinerary by 2 days because I will have to return to Zurich after, and may not get much time at St. Moritz, but if it is absolutely worth it, I will!)

    2. Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card (not sure which will work out cheaper).

If anybody knows of any tour companies that do small group tours on a budget, I wouldn’t mind joining one of those too. Any suggestions about lovely places to live in or restaurants to eat in are also welcome. Also, does it make more sense to stay in a central place (like Lucerne or Interlaken) for the entire duration of the trip, or should I spend each night at a different place?

Thank you so much, and eagerly looking forward to being in Switzerland for the first time!

    Hello Nadini7,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps!

Your itinerary is ambitious. I have attached some links to help you plan more efficient; there you may decide whether or not you would like to scale back on some of the sites and spend more time on certain ones.

I would suggest that you base your stay in one place while you are visiting Switzerland. I feel that Interlaken would be a good central place for you to stay because you have three days of visits based in the Bernese Oberland region.

The Swiss Travel Pass, in particular the eight day pass would be beneficial for your itinerary. The advantages of not having to purchase a ticket for each time you travel and for all the places you would like to cover in Switzerland would make sense economically. Please read this link to help you decide:

I have attached a link with culinary tours that would be an interest to you since you mentioned the Lindt Chocolate factory and suggestions on restaurants to eat at. There are some great tours in combination of sight seeing and eating all in one go!

    Happy planning!

So I revised the itinerary a bit:

    Does this look more doable?

    24 Feb – Zurich

    25 – Lucerne

26 – Titlis & onward to Interlaken (stay at Interlaken)

    27, 28, 29 – Jungfrau, Grindelwald, Interlaken

    1, 2 Mar – Zermatt

3 – Return to Zurich via Glacier Express, change trains @ Chur (8:52 to 15:53)

    Hi Nandini7,

I was looking at your itinerary, it certainly looks do-able. What time do you arrive in Zurich? I see you are planning to combine a city tour with a visit to the Rhein Falls. Here’s a half-day tour that might interest you if you are too busy to work out the logistics 🙂 You can browse the pages for more similar packages, I think this would be helpful in planning, and give you some ideas about what you can do in a day.

Hi Anna! Thanks! I will be in Zurich from 21-23 for work, so I can start the day early on 24th 🙂 Thanks for that link! Accommodation is already almost full in many places, so I think I should book fast. I am so excited 😀

<<“Accommodation is already almost full in many places,”>>

In the Alps, there will be a few skiers…;-)
