A traveler named Shireen is planning a trip through Switzerland and is curious about the reliability of the SBB luggage transport service. They want to know if the service is dependable and if luggage typically arrives safely at the next destination.
Key takeaways:
The SBB luggage transport service is generally reliable, but plan for a 2-day delivery time for luggage.
When using the service, confirm the pick-up hours at your destination station to avoid inconvenience.
You can purchase the luggage forwarding service at the station, and the staff will securely attach the luggage label for you.
Packing a smaller bag with essentials for your journey makes traveling easier without heavy luggage.
Consider using the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient travel throughout Switzerland.

I will be travelling to different parts of Switzerland and came across that SBB has a luggage transport service. Have read all the details on it but would like to get a personal take on it as I could not really find any first hand experience thoughts of the service. I am wondering if it is reliable and if luggage arrives at the next destination in 1 piece etc.

Hi Shireen,
I would say the SBB luggage transport service is quite reliable. Probably the only setback is that you receive your luggage at your destination in 2 days. So a bit of advance planning is needed but this is a convenient solution if you want to avoid travelling with heavy luggage. You can find useful information about how to travel with luggage on Swiss trains here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage

I’ve used the service many times (I usually travel with a 15 day Swiss Travel Pass, and use the forwarding service 2-3 times during a single trip.) In my experience, it has been 100% reliable. The luggage storage offices are not open 24/7, so you’ll need to plan accordingly. When I’ve arrived after they’ve closed for the day, my hotel has offered to send their porter to collect it first thing in the morning. If your hotel offers to do this, you’ll need to provide them with your luggage claim document.

Hi Shireen,
I just arrived in Zurich yesterday (the morn of the 11th). After reading several posts from Lastlook for some time, I decided to go with it. The first thing I did was go to the SBB office there and take care of my STP, exchanged some money, and sent my big bag to Zermatt. (Thanks Lastlook) The man helping me even found out that it would have cost an additional 30 francs had I sent it direct to the hotel. Saved me some money. When I originally packed, I packed two bags. One was the big bag, and the other was a good-sized backpack. In it, I had two day’s worth of whatever I needed, as well as a smaller backpack. This allowed me to take my time getting to Montreux and see some of the vineyards on my way. So far, it’s worked out great. (I will be doing the same from Zermatt to Interlaken so I can see Oeshinensee on my way up there.) I’ll let you know tomorrow if I can’t find my bag in Zermatt..lol.

Hi Danielsan,
Wishing you a great trip! I’m confident that you’ll be happy with the luggage forwarding service – it is a wonderful convenience. Similar to your plan, I just carry my daypack with what I need for a couple of days, and then refresh when I collect my rolling bag at my next destination. Next month, I’m making a quick one week trip to Zermatt, so will just bring a carry on with a fold up daypack. I bought the Half Fare Card and two Saver Day Passes for my transportation since I’m only going to Zermatt this time. Can’t wait!

Hi Lastlook,
Yes, as you read above, you inspired my thoughts about that. At this very moment, I’m spending my 60th B-day hangin’ at an Irish pub, owned by a Pakistani fella, in the French speaking part of Switzerland (Montreux). Can’t make this stuff up…lol (Spent my 55th here 5 yrs ago, too). So tomorrow, I head back to Zermatt to pick up my big bag. I can’t wait! Thanks again, and enjoy your trip as well.

Happy 60th Birthday, Danielsan! After Luzern, Mt. Pilatus, Murren and Wengen, I spent one night in Montreux last summer before Chamonix, then several nights in Zermatt, then continued on to Lugano/Morcote, and finally Pontresina. This time, I decided to book the Alpenhof (with half board) in Zermatt. I hope you’ll post a review of your trip when you return. Cheers!

I found that usebounce could be better service, thinking of using it whilst on Zurich / Lucerne / Interlaken but 20kg bag might be unavailable.

Hi Shireen,
Everything worked out fine. Arrived around 1400 in Zermatt, found the pick up area, found out they were there til 2100. So I went across the street to have a couple cocktails to kill some time before checking in at 1500. Went back, and it was there, no problem. As far as hours are concerned, I believe it varies. I would assume the larger, busier stations would be open longer, but not certain (moderators?). It appears that the luggage arrives and is just stored on racks in whatblooks like a small wharehouse. Its that easy. As I said earlier, I will do the same thing tomorrow, sending it to Wengen. Its pretty unbeatable having the freedom to not be held down by luggage and roam as you please. BTW, it was 12 Chf. Well worth it!
Thanks for the happy wishes. Enjoy!
Regards,
Danielsan

Thanks for sharing your SBB luggage transfer experience Danielsan. Very helpful for fellow travelers.
Belated birthday wishes for yesterday! That’s pretty special to be celebrating in exactly the same place, 5 years ago!
Yes, the opening and closing hours will vary I suspect per rail station. Best to check via the link I provided earlier.
Enjoy the rest of your trip, hope the weather picks up tomorrow.

Hi Yolahda, and Lastlook,
No problem, and thanks for the happy wishes. I definitely believe the hours vary between stations, as I sent my big bag off to Wengen this morning. She told me that in Wengen, the pick-up service closes at 1600. So it sounds like the smaller ones may close early. When checking in the bag for this service, it’s best to ask the clerk what time the pick-up service closes. She had no problem looking it up.
For anyone planning to do this in Zermatt, it can be done right at the train station’s ticket purchasing window, located right outside the station itself.
Also, just as an FYI, if anyone is planning to go to Sunnegga/Blauherd/Rothorn, the restaurant at Rothorn is closed. If you want to eat, you’ll need to either bring with you or get something at Sunnegga on the way up. (Or down, as I did.)

Hello forum folks.
Ijust wanted to make a slight correction to one of my last posts. The ticket purchasing office in Zermatt is not in front, however it is about half way down plattorm 5. If entering from the street, it is directly across the street from Casa Mia restaurant, just past the Gornergrat station.
Regards,
Danielsan

Hi Hamal Hero,
Thanks for suggesting usebounce as a luggage storage option. I’ve never heard of it before but it seems legit. Basically it’s a free app that displays luggage storage near you. These could be shops or restaurants, etc — they earn money from the platform by offering luggage storage service to customers. A bit like Airbnb for luggage I might add. Fairly new in Switzerland so options may be limited to big and major cities at the moment. Check the website to those interested for more info.
