Best winter month to visit Switzerland
A traveler named BillTheGreat is planning a 6-7 day winter trip to Switzerland, considering Zurich or Lucerne as their base. They're looking for advice on best locations to visit, the timing in mid to late March for snowy mountains vs. snowy cities, and whether the Swiss Travel Pass would be beneficial for their itinerary.
- Lucerne is recommended as a better base than Zurich for your travel plans due to proximity to mountains and attractions.
- March is a good time to visit for snow in the mountains, but low valleys may start blooming.
- Most cable cars will be operating in March, but expect some valley areas to be green.
- The Swiss Travel Pass is the best option for your planned itinerary, especially since many mountain trips are included.
- Make sure to check webcams and weather forecasts right before visiting mountain attractions to ensure good views.

Hello,
I’m trying to organize a trip to Switzerland in winter for up to 6-7 days.
Our base will be either in Zurich or Lucerne (we need your suggestions about that).
We want to explore Zurich, Lucerne, Mount Pilatus or Rigi, Bern, Rhine Falls, Grindelwald, Mürren maybe take the Bernina Express.
We are interested in a period with snow in the mountains/villages, but not snowy cities.
Do you think that the mid or late March is a good time for that trip?
Thank you in advance for your reply/suggestions.
