Eurail Global Pass for Swiss trains: do I need tickets on free days?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Milan to Switzerland, visiting cities like Tirano, Chur, Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, and Lauterbrunnen. They want to know if their Eurail Global Pass allows them to travel on Swiss trains without buying extra tickets for routes that don’t require reservations, and if they can hop on and off trains using the pass.

Key takeaways:
  • You can use the Eurail Global Pass on Swiss trains without needing to purchase seat reservations unless taking scenic trains.
  • Once activated for the day, you can hop on and off trains freely, but it's advisable to add each specific train to your itinerary.
  • The Global Pass also covers some boats and offers discounts on trams and gondolas, so always ask about Eurail discounts when buying tickets.

    Hi

I’m planning to get global pass as I will be traveling from Milan to Tirano, Tirano to Chur and other places within Switzerland like Zuric , Lucerne, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen.

I thought of buying global pass as I’ll be starting by getting a train from Frankfurt to milan first and then travel through Tirano, Swizz and back to Frankfurt via Basel.

Question is about the pass , Can I just show the activated day pass to travel in trains without buying a train ticket where a reservation a is not needed ?

For example Train from Milan to Tirano,  Chur to Zuric  , Zuric to Lucerne etc

Also Can I just hop on hop off trains with the activated day pass ?

The Eurail Global Pass worked great for us in Switzerland (and all over Europe).  Once you have put in your first train for the day and activated the pass for the day you are free to get on and off the trains as much as you want.  We were told that you are supposed to add each specific train you take to your pass so technically when you get off one train and get on a new one you should add it to your itinerary that day.  Since the main thing is that the pass is activated for that day I don’t know that they would actually care if that specific train is listed or not.  It generates a QR code in the app at the start of the day that they scan, so not sure they even see the whole itinerary or just a valid code.  The few times we did have our passes checked they also asked for passports as well so I recommend having those handy as well.

The Global Pass also covers a number of boats in Switzerland as well as giving discounts on trams, gondolas, etc.  It took a bit of digging on their website to find them, but they are listed there.  We also found discounts not listed on the website so it never hurts so ask when buying any kind of ticket if they have a Eurail discount.  Most of the discounts you can even use on a day that you don’t have the pass activated as long as it had validity left.  I think the boats required us to to activate a day to use them just like riding a train.
