Glacier and Gotthard Express Zermatt-Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

Cheryl is planning a scenic train trip starting from Zermatt on May 8, combining the Glacier Express and Gotthard Panoramic Express. She's having trouble finding suitable timings for these trains and is asking for advice on whether there's only one timing for the Panoramic Express trains each day.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider using regular trains instead of the Glacier and Gotthard panoramic trains to simplify your trip and save on costs.
  • There is only one Gotthard Panorama Express train per day in each direction.
  • For a scenic alternative, travel from Zermatt to Lucerne via Visp, Goppenstein, Kandersteg, and Interlaken, which is beautiful as well.

    Hi All,

I’ve read that i can combine both the Glacier Express and the Gotthard Panoramic Express by starting from Zermatt taking the Glacier express to Andermatt, then taking the cogwheel train to Goschenen, and then taking the Gotthard Panoramic Express to Lucerne. I’m planning to take this trip on 08May19, however I can’t find a suitable timing where all these journeys fit as per the SBB timetable and website. Is there only 1 timing for the Panoramic Express trains? Any suggestions?

    Thank you.

    Regards,

    Cheryl

Hi Cheryl and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

You can certainly combine those two routes. It gets more difficult trying to join the actual two “panoramic” trains. The easiest way to do it is to ignore the posh trains and just do the journey on regular trains.

Use the SBB Timetable (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) to plan your travel. If you are not familiar with using the timetable (although I guess fro you previous comments you are) it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for your swift reply!

Do you mean to just skip the Panoramic trains and just go by the normal trains?

So there’s only 1 timing within the day for the Panoramic Express trains?

    Regards,

    Cheryl

    Hi Cheryl,

There is only one Gotthard Panorama Express per day (in each direction north to south), but even if there wasn’t it makes not sense to pay for a 1st Class-only seat reservation from Göschenen to Flüelen. Even if they offer such seat reservations.

Depending on the time of year there are zero to 3 GEX departures from Zermatt daily. So you have a choice of regular trains all the way or GEX to Andermatt and regular trains/boats from there.

    Hi Cheryl,

Apart from the excellent help provided by Rockoyster, you can study the Glacier Express and Gotthard Panorama Express timetables using the links under “More on other websites” at

Another scenic route between Zermatt and Lucerne would be Zermatt-Visp-Goppenstein-Kandersteg (use the regional Lötschberger trains instead of the faster tunnel route)-Interlaken-Meiringen-Lucerne. You’ll follow part of the Golden Pass line (myswissalps.com/golden pass) in that case, and the ride through the Lötschberg mountains is beautiful too.

The Gotthard Panorama Express is nothing terribly special in my opinion.

Just take the normal trains and you won’t have to worry about extra costs, reservations etc

    Itinerary would be

Zermatt – Visp – Andermatt (change at Visp): MGB railway

Andermatt – Göschenen: MGB railway ‘Schöllenen Bahn’

Göschenen to wherever you wish next (SBB main line trains)

As I have just posted on another thread:

There is no real need to use the Glacier Express from Andermatt – Zermatt (and vice versa). The same journey can be achieved with just one change by regular Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn train – without supplementary fare or the ‘extra hype’ – it’s a much more genuine journey (I travelled on the same line about 10 times in the last two weeks…)

You can get a regular train Andermatt – Visp and change into a Visp – Zermatt service (sometimes although advertised separately one train actually becomes the other at Visp!)
