Glacier Express vs regular train route to Zermatt

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, Drmanish, is trying to enjoy the famous Glacier Express but can't do the whole route. They are asking which section is best for a partial trip since they are staying in Luzern and Interlaken and planning to visit Zermatt from Interlaken. The advice suggests opting for regular trains instead of the Glacier Express to get great views on their journey.

Key takeaways:
  • Take regular trains from Visp to Zermatt since there's only one track and it's the same for both types of trains.
  • Make sure to travel via Kandersteg at least once between Spiez and Zermatt for a beautiful scenic route on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train.
  • Check out the Glacier Express route online for a better understanding of train connections and options.

Hi, this is my first post

My question is if i’m not able to do whole glacier express route and want to do it partially then which section is best ? We are staying in luzern and interlaken and planning to visit zermatt from interlaken.

Say for example if i’m going to zermatt from interlaken : then the route from visp to zermatt is same for glacier express and regular trains?

    Thanks.

Hello Drmanish and Welcome to MySwissAlps

There is only one train track from Visp to Zermatt. Avoid the Glacier Express and take regular trains.

Make sure that at least in one direction between Spiez and Zermatt you go via Kandersteg. You will then travel on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train over the traditional, more than 100 year old mountain route, giving you a wonderful view along the impressive peaks and down into the Rhone Valley. The faster more direct but less scenic route between Spiez and Visp incorporates the lengthy (in distance) but short (in time) Lötschberger Base Tunnel.

    Thanks rockoyster for your reply,

We’ll do that. you mean to say that by travelling on Regio – Express Lotschberger we can have view of glacier express root between Spiez and Brig – correct me if i’m wrong.

    Thanks.

Well you will see a short part if the Glacier Express route as you approach (or depart) Brig depending which way you choose to go. But nothing to get excited about. Both Brig and Visp are on the Glacier Express route.

The attached map shows you the two routes between Spiez and Zermatt. The dashed red lines are tunnels.
