Hiking near Jungfrau region and Lucerne mid-April

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Mark and his wife are visiting Interlaken and Lucerne for 3 nights each from April 9-15. They are looking for lowland hiking suggestions since the mountains will be snow-covered. They ask for trails that are likely open and possibly some that might be accessible if the weather is good.

Key takeaways:
  • The hike from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg is a scenic option that should be open.
  • Look for trails under 1000 m around Mount Rigi, as they are likely to be accessible in April.
  • Check with local tourist offices in Interlaken for current trail conditions and advice.
  • Consider the value of walking in valleys for beautiful views of the mountains.

    Hello,

My wife and I will be staying 3 nights in Interlaken and 3 nights in Lucerne April 9-15. I understand that these dates are not optimal for hiking as the mountains will still be snow covered, however does anyone have any favorite low land hiking spots in these areas? Any suggestions appreciated, and maybe if you could include some trails that you are nearly positive will be open and also some that may be open if we are lucky and there is an early spring/good weather.

    Thanks for any input!

    Hi Mark

The hike from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg and return by bus will likely be open. It is through Lauterbrunnen Valley and very scenic. I believe there are a number of hikes along the lakes from Interlaken. I don’t know specific hikes but I expect your hotel can advise you.

Less likely to be passable is from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg up the Grindelwald valley

The locals do keep some of the more popular higher hikes open in winter but I’m not sure they continue maintaining them in April. you should check with the local tourist office in Interlaken, Grindelwald, or Lauterbrunnen for a current update when you arrive. Mark

    Hi Mark and Mark 🙂

Quite some trails at Mount Rigi near Lucerne should be open as it’s not too high over there.

More hiking (and other) ideas are here:

I’d estimate all trails under 1000 m should be no problem, and a good chance that some higher ones are accessible as well.

I agree, I doubt the Rigi area will have much snow by April, especially the lower reaches. There is a ’round Rigi path’ that you can access from Weggis, Küssnacht am Rigi etc

Also, don’t underestimate the value of walking in the valleys and flatter areas – looking up at the mountains
