Hi

Based on previous suggestions, I have taken another shot at my itinerary. We are two families, adults – mid 40s and three teens. We will be in Switzerland for 7 days and going to Paris after that. Can you please check the below and help with the questions I have?

Day 1 – Arrive in Zurich and head over to Lucerne. Do sightseeing in Lucerne for the rest of the day – after checking in.

Day 2, – Head to Lauterbrunnen via STP and stay here. Do some sightseeing in this area – thinking of walking around in Lauterbruennen; falls area. Stay in Lauterbrunnen

Day 3 – Head to Jungfrauh – stay in Lauterbrunnen

Day 4 – SynSchynige Platte and Schilthorn – can we do both in one day? Stay in Lauterbrunnen. Another option is head to Zermatt at the end of the day. Is this possible?

Day 5 – Zermatt – Gornergrat adn Klein – can we do both in one day? Can we do a day from from Lauterbrunnen or should be plan to stay in Zermatt. If staying in Zermatt is better, what do we do with our luggage?

Day 6 – If staying in Zermatt, go to Geneva and spend the day in Geneva – stay in Geneva. Is it possible to go to Montreaux, Chateau de Chillon adn then go to Geneva. Is it better to spend a day in Geneva? Another option is, if we stay fully in Lauterbrunnen, we can go to Montreaux from there. I have read that this train ride is really good. In which case, should we make Lauterbrunnen our base and do day trip to Zermatt.

Day 7 – Head from Geneva to Paris.

Are there any other landscapes are we missing that we should cover?

Regarding travel pass, thinking of buying 8 day Swiss Travel Pass. Since we are in Jungfruah for 3 days, should we also buy Jungfrauh travel pass? Please advice.

You can do Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn in a day. But will weather cooperate is the issue Sreela. In mountains you have to keep allowance for bad weather.

Not doing Mt Titlis? Kids may like it. It has 360 degree rotating lifts.

Stay at Zermatt is nice. They do not allow non-electric vehicles there. So the place has pristine weather. Morning when you wake up take look at mighty Mantterhorne.

Thank you for the input. With going to Jungfrauh and Zermatt, I thought Titlus may be more of the same. But you and few others have suggested Titlus. So, will have to see where we can squeeze that in.

The key to finding out what you can do in one day is to use the Swiss Timetable to plan your trips. How much travel time you are happy with, and how long you spend at each destination is up to you.

The train to Schynige Platte runs 26 May to 28 Oct 2018; the cable car to the Schilthorn is closed for maintenance from 12 November 2018 until early December. What are your travel dates?

The name of the mountain is Klein Matterhorn – Little Matterhorn. Calling it Klein doesn’t make any sense 🙂

You can use the Swiss Timetable to find out what you can do in a day.

If you are there at the right time of the year, you can take a shortcut between Klein Matterhorn and Gornergrat (or vice versa).

There are luggage lockers downstairs at Zermatt railway station.

Personal preference. I would regard any time in Geneva as a very low priority, but others would disagree.

From Lauterbrunnen you can indeed travel on the Golden Pass route from Interlaken Ost to Montreux via Zweisimmen. This is a lovely scenic trip.

That’s a possibility, but is a choice you need to make yourself. First, find out the travel times using the Swiss Timetable.

The Jungfrau Travel Pass is available between 5 May and 21 October 2018. It would not usually be cost effective to buy both passes.

There is only one way to know for sure: plan your itinerary in detail, including all trips by train, bus, boat and cable car. Then look up the full-fare cost of all these planned trips and compare the total cost of separate tickets with the cost of doing the same trips with the Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card etc.

It is important to be aware that the fare shown for any trip in the Swiss Timetable defaults to half fare, as most Swiss residents will have a Half-Fare travelcard which entitles them to this discount. Your calculations need to be based on full fares, which are double the default fare that comes up.

Hi Sreela,

Usually people get either the Swiss Travel Pass OR the Jungfrau Travel Pass but not both. Often the extra purchase price doesn’t make up for the extra discounts you get (you are already getting a discount with the Swiss Travel Pass).

Sometimes, if you spend most of your time in Switzerland in the Jungfrau region, buying a Swiss Half Fare Card and a Jungfrau Travel Pass instead of the STP can be a good idea though.

Thank you Lucas and Alpenrose666. We will stick with STP. We decided to stay in Lucerne, Wengen (due to lack of availability in Lauterbrunnen), Zermatt and Geneva.
