Itinerary help 8 nights late December from Geneva

Short summary – read this first

Sunita is planning her first trip to Switzerland from December 23rd to 30th, landing in Geneva from Bangalore. She wants to visit several cities including Geneva, Zermatt, Thun or Interlaken, Jungfrau region, Lucerne, Bern, Montreux, and Zurich, and is seeking advice on how to organize her itinerary and which rail pass to purchase.

Key takeaways:
  • Stay in at most 3 towns to minimize luggage hassle, ideally Geneva, Zermatt, and Interlaken.
  • Consider overnighting in Lucerne if you want to visit Bern and Zurich but be prepared to cut some destinations.
  • The 8-day Swiss Travel Pass is recommended; check the pass details to know what is covered.

    Hi,

This is our first trip to Switzerland and we plan to be there on December 23rd. Although I have all the cities I need to cover in my plan I need assistance on how to go about. We have 8 nights there from Dec 23rd till Dec 30th. We will land into Geneva from Bangalore(India) on Dec 23rd. Cities I want to cover are –

Geneva ( visit Chamonix), Zermatt (Matterhorn) from here I am not sure to base ourselves in Thun or Interlaken. I wish to cover Jungfrau region, Lucerne, Bern and Montreux. (Don’t know how to plan this). From these places visit Zurich (do the Rhine falls and Schaffhausen).

I also am not sure which Rail pass to buy and if buying the pass do we still need to pay for any rail routes here. We will be 2 adults.

Your thoughts in my planning will really help us.

    Thanks so much.

    Sunita

Hi Sunita and welcome to MySwissAlps!

I would try and only stay in at most 3 towns during your stay to prevent moving too much with luggage. Perhaps Geneva, Zermatt and Interlaken area (town is up to you).

You may want to also overnight in Lucerne if you must visit Bern and Zurich as well but you don’t have many days to cover your itinerary. I would cut something out – personally at least Bern and Zurich.

I would arrange your itinerary like this:

    1. Geneva – 1 or 2 nights
    2. Zermatt – 2 nights
    3. Interlaken (or Thun or Lauterbrunnen or Wengen – many options) – 2 or 3 nights
    4. Zurich or Geneva depending on where you fly out from on 30th (especially if you have an early flight)

How long you spend at each town will depend on what you want to see in the area. If you want to spend more time up in the Swiss mountains add nights to the Jungfrau region (Interlaken etc).

Use the Swiss railways timetable to plan your train trips between towns and up into the mountains.

For your itinerary and length of trip I would definitely look at the 8 day Swiss Travel Pass – read the following for more information about price and what is covered by the pass.
