Saver Day Pass or regular ticket Zurich-Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

Melissa is planning a trip to Switzerland from late September to early October and has bought an 8-Day Swiss Travel Pass. She needs advice on whether to purchase a point-to-point ticket or a Saver Day Pass for her first day, as well as some tips for their itinerary, which includes popular destinations like Mt. Titlis, Jungfrau, and Glacier Express.

Key takeaways:
  • Buy a point-to-point ticket from Zurich to Lucerne for Day 1 since you’ll just be exploring the city that day.
  • You don’t need to make seat reservations for the Lucerne to Interlaken train, as it's not peak season.
  • Reserve a seat for everyone, including children, on the Glacier Express for a comfortable ride.
  • Hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg may take around 2 hours with a 4-year-old, so it should be fine to head to Jungfraujoch around noon.

    Hi there,

Good day to you! My name is Melissa.

We will be making a trip to Switzerland end of Sept – early Oct. We have purchased the 8-Day Swiss Travel Pass. However, we need an extra day and are not sure whether should we purchase the point-to-point ticket or the Saver Day Pass.

    Our itinerary is as follows:

Day 1 – Arrive in Zurich and travel straight to Lucerne. Spend entire day around Lucerne Old Town.

Day 2 – Mt Titlis (Golden Round Trip)

Day 3 – Stanserhorn then proceed to Wengen

    Day 4 – Jungfrau / Männlichen

    Day 5 – Schilthorn

Day 6 – First – Bachalpsee, then proceed to Zermatt

Day 7 – Gornergrat and Sunnegga

Day 8 – Matterhorn Glacier Paradise

Day 9 – Back to Zurich via Glacier Express

We were thinking of using the 8-Day STP from Day 2 onwards. Would it be better to purchase a Saver Day Pass or point-to-point ticket for Day 1? Other suggestions are welcomed.

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards,

    Melissa

Hi Melissa and thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

Even if you’d be able to secure Saver Day Passes for the lowest price, they would still cost CHF 52: http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass/price. A regular full fare ticket Zurich-Lucerne costs CHF 25, so that’s a better option if you won’t make any other trips during day 1. You can try if you can get a cheaper Supersaver ticket a couple of days in advance. They’re valid for specific trains only though, so you’ll have to be sure you can catch that train after arrival in Zurich: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/switzerland. An 8 day Swiss Travel Pass definitely makes sense for day 2-9: http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/price.

By the way, I’d recommend to take the Glacier Express only as far as Chur on day 9. It would take a whole lot of time to complete the entire route up to St. Moritz and then head for Zurich, backtracking the segment St. Moritz-Chur. Please refer to http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress/gettingth ere and http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

Note that the “Golden Round trip” is a term applied to Pilatus, not to Titlis: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti tlis/gettingthere, http://www.myswissalps.com/pi latus/gettingthere.

    Hi Annika,

Thank you so much for your response. I have decided to get the point-to-point ticket from Zurich to Lucerne since we will only be hanging around town on the day.

    Best regards,

    Melissa

    Hi Annika,

    Good day to you!

In regards to the STP, I read different views about having to make a seat reservation for our train journey from Lucerne to Interlaken. We will be traveling on 27 Sept. Some say there is no need to do so, while others say it is a must. Do we really need to make a seat reservation, since end of Sept is no longer the peak season? Or is it better to do so in case the places run out?

    Thanks and best regards,

    Melissa

    Hi Melissa,

No, you don’t need reservations for Lucerne-Interlaken. There are regular trains on this route, leaving frequently, and end-September is no longer tourist high season. You may have heard others talk about the Golden Pass route (of which Lucerne-Interlaken is part), and seat reservations are recommended in high season for the leg Zweisimmen-Montreux only: http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass/tickets. Please refer to http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/reservations as well.

    Hi Annika,

    Noted on that, thanks!

As for the Glacier Express from Zermatt to Chur, reservations is a must, right? However, I read this on their website. “The fee must be paid in full by all passengers, including children and others holding discount travel passes. This does not apply to children under six who do not require a seat.”

We will be travelling with a 4 year old and plan to get a seat for her as it will be uncomfortable travelling long distance with her sitting on our lap. So in this case, can we reserve a seat for her? All 4 of us adults will be travelling for free, only having to pay the reservation fees, since we have the STP.

    Thanks and best regards,

    Melissa

    Hi Melissa,

That’s correct, you’ll have to get seat reservations for each person occupying his/her own seat. So you’d best reserve for your child as well, as that will be much more comfortable indeed. Here’s how to arrange for your reservations: http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress/tickets. Theoretically you could use regional trains too. They don’t require seat reservations but don’t come with the comfortable seats, panoramic windows, explanation on the route offered by the Glacier Express, etcetera, and you’ll have to change trains a couple of times. Please refer to “Regular trains versus Glacier Express” at http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress.

    Hi Annika,

I would like your opinion on my plan below.

We will be staying in Wengen and doing a day trip to (in this order):

    a) Männlichen – Klein Scheidegg hike

    b) Klein Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch

Since the first cable car from Wengen to Mannlichen starts at 830AM, and it only takes approx 15 min to get to Mannlichen, we should be able to start the hike down around 9AM. How long does it take to hike down to KS, taking into consideration there is a 4-year old with us? We plan to grab a quick bite in KS before taking the train up to Jungfraujoch. Do you think it is too late to head up to Jungfraujoch around noon (weather-dependent)?

    Thanks and best regards,

    Melissa

    Hi Melissa,

The hiking time is 1h 30 from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, but with a 4 years old it will be a bit more I guess. I would say you can count around 2 hours, it depends on you child. Please read this page about this route (you’ll find more about the difficulty, distance etc.): http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/maennlichen-kleinescheidegg

I do not think it is too late to go up then to Jungfraujoch. Usually it is more clearly in the morning, but this is not necessary. It is a good idea to check the weather forecast and be aware of this too: http://www.myswissalps.com/we ather/forecast
