Saver Day Pass from Geneva to mountain top

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named marmads is planning a trip from Geneva to various mountain routes, specifically on Feb. 13 or March 20. They want to know if a Saver Day Pass can be used for these trips and are looking for advice on the best mountains to visit, ideally for a day trip, and managing logistics for sightseeing and snowshoeing.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the train to Rochers de Naye from Montreux as it’s included with the Saver Day Pass, but it operates only Wednesday to Sunday in winter.
  • For a summer day trip, consider Rigi, where the Saver Day Pass covers trains, cableways, and boats.
  • Look into visiting Zermatt for stunning views of the Matterhorn, but remember that you may have to pay extra to access higher areas beyond the village.

    Hello,

Is it doable to use a saver day pass for a trip from Geneva to any mountain route or mountain top?

On the website – saverdaypass/howtouse – i read that “There are a few mountain routes that also allow free traveling. In such cases you may need to get a ticket as access gates require a specific ticket type. You can get a free ticket upon presenting your Saver Day Pass.”

Aiming to travel either on Feb. 13 or March 20 if at all possible.

Thank you in advance for any leads.

The nearest (and best) mountain summit railway to Geneva that is free with the Saver Day Pass is Rochers de Naye, which runs from Montreux station. It is easily accessible as a day trip but the line only operates on Wednesdays to Sundays in February and March.

Further away but still easily reached as a day trip are all the mountain railways which run up from Aigle and Bex into the mountains, ie Aigle – Leysin, Aigle – Champery, Aigle – Les Diablerets and Bex – Villars – Bretaye. Bretaye is the highest altitude destination on these lines.

There is also the Les Pleiades mountain railway from Vevey.

Oh lovely! Thank you 1960man. Your quick reply is very much appreciated.

I will research on the suggestions you made and narrow it down to a single joice for Feb. day trip (most likely Rochers de Naye that you mentioned to be best and near to Geneva) and hopefully another choice for a day trip come March this year.

I hope i could still come back in this forum with some more questions should the need arise.

Your suggestions are very helpful to me as apart from Nyon, I have not seen much else of Switzerland. I find the mountains around here just simply amazing! and hope to do a bit of sightseeing on some them (with start point in Geneva) and perhaps try snowshoeing as a newbie.

    with regards, marmads

Thank you for your fast reply Anna and a nice welcome to the site!

I had indeed looked into the link you so kindly provided and found the Rigi trip to be optimal as well (apart from day trip to Rochers de Naye recommended by 1960man) for using the Saver day pass – where its free for trainrides, cableways and boat rides. Not sure about cogwheel rides? or is it the same as cableways? I am not familiar with these 2 rides.

I am though not sure if its possible to do Rigi on a day trip. I am very positive of all the things to experience at Rigi.

Again many thanks for your help.

    Regards, marmads

    Hi marmads,

The Saver Day Pass is indeed valid on all transportation in Rigi. This includes the cable cars and the cogwheel trains (and also the boats from Vitznau or Weggis to Lucerne if you want to include that in your trip). You can find more information here: http://www.myswissalps.com/rigi/gettingthere

A day trip from Geneva to Rigi is doable especially in the summer time. Try to take the earliest train out if you want to spend more time at the top. If you take the 5pm train for your return journey, you can make it back to Geneva by 10pm.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hey Anna,

Those are helpful information. Again thanks.

I will definitely keep in mind what you said and will be planning a day trip to Rigi come summer time.

Until the death of the last senior family member in October I had a ‘family’ base in the Geneva area for 60 years, so I can advise about any day trips from Geneva. Once with my late uncle we went to Engelberg for the day, so it is certainly possible to reach the Luzern area on a day from Geneva, especially if you want to watch some lovely Swiss scenery pass by the window of the train (this would be possible in the morning in early Spring – on the return trip likely to be quite a lot in the dark, a book will help!). This is helped by the innovation in recent years of regular direct trains Geneve – Luzern (route IR15, depart Geneve every hour at xx.59 and Nyon at xx.13, journey time to Luzern = just under 3 hours; eg Nyon 07.13, Luzern 10.01 . Having said that I think you would be better sticking to somewhere closer to Geneve.

Of course you also have the Nyon – La Cure railway, but that climbs up the Jura through the forest so views of the Alps are limited compared to Les Pleiades and Rochers de Naye

You can also reach Zermatt from Geneve for a day trip, but you would have to pay extra to get above Zermatt village, but you can see the Matterhorn from the village, especially if you walk up to the top end of the village

    Hi again,

I second 1960man’s suggestion to go to Zermatt. As an alternative to Gornergrat, you can take the funicular to Sunnegga. A standard return ticket (without any discount) cost CHF22.50 which is substantially cheaper than the CHF100 round trip to Gornergrat. The ride up to Sunnegga takes less than 10 mins (Gornergrat takes about 40 mins).

More info about Sunnegga here: http://www.myswissalps.com/sunneggarothorn

    Hey Anna

Doing things economically is also very nice to know. Thanks for that.

If i were to ask you in which season would you like to visit Zematt best, which one will you choose? winter, spring, summer or fall? for a sightseeing trip combined with a few hours hike.

    Regards,

    marmads

Economical yes, but there is a reason why the Gornergrat railway has a higher price – it is MUCH more fun and spectacular. Sunnegga is a dingy underground funicular. The Gornergrat Bahn is a legendary mountain railway. The Gornergrat ride is also much better for your body, as the slower ascent allows you to acclimatise to the altitude. In many trips to Zermatt I have alighted at Gornergrat summit and felt fine. If I went u the Klein Matterhorn cable car – a much faster ascent – I get off at the top and need to overcome a short period of altitude-related giddyness.

Here are some of my winter pictures

Any season is great. It depends if you prefer warm weather hiking but with the chance to laze around on high alpine pastures taking in the view, or see views like I posted in the other post

Oh wow! Those are awesome winter photos of the Gornergrat train experience for the mountain top trip from Zermatt. Nice of you to share them.

Not having read much yet about train rides up to the summit from Zermatt village, common sense tells me that there must be a reason for the difference on various train ride options knowing the place to be a popular tourist destination.

Also a good point there on taking into consideration about altitude sickness, as one who is just use to lowland living and travelling & never been to high altitudes, one do not just immediately think about this matter.

Thanks 1960man and thanks too to Anna and the rest of myswissalps team for the helpful and informative tips so far being extended to me.

    kind regards, marmads

    Hey Arno

Thank you for that information. It makes me better equipped to make an informed choice as to places to visit on certain seasons given as in my case, the limited occasions to travel far and wide.

    Regards, marmads
