Key takeaways:

    Hi all,

Is it possible to visit Schwarzsee and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in the one day? We had set aside a day each, but could only get our preferred accommodation for 3 nights, not 4 as hoped. Thought instead of changing hotels in Zermatt we could just delete one night, and move on. Our plan is:

Day/Night 1 – arrive from Locarno, overnight in Zermatt

Day/Night 2 – up to Gornergrat, overnight Kulmhotel Gornergrat

    Day/Night 3 – visit Sunnegga, overnight Zermatt

Day/Night 4 – visit Schwarzsee and Klein Matterhorn, overnight Zermatt

Move on to Montreux area, or stay at a different hotel in Zermatt if Day 4 above not do-able comfortably.

    Thanks,

    Narelle

    Hi Rels
Yes, it is possible to cover Schwarzsee and the Klein Matterhorn – Glacier Paradise in one day.

Check out the alternative route via Schwarzsee following this link. http://www.myswissalps.com/kl einmatterhorn/gettingt here

    Your itinerary sounds fabulous.

Moving on to Montreux is an option to consider. Check out train timetables here.

You can also think of taking a section of the Glacier Express. Here’s the route.

As an expert on Zermatt, I think you may have overestimated the time needed for each section.

“Day/Night 1 – arrive from Locarno, overnight in Zermatt”

    That’s fine

“Day/Night 2 – up to Gornergrat, overnight Kulmhotel Gornergrat”

If you are already in Zermatt, it won’t take all day to get up to Gornergrat and then stay the night. The train up to Gornergrat only takes 30 minutes

    “Day/Night 3 – visit Sunnegga, overnight Zermatt”

Not sure Sunnegga adds anything if you are already planning to do Gornergrat and Klein Matterhorn. But if you do want to do it there should be time given what I have just mentioned above

Day/Night 4 – visit Schwarzsee and Klein Matterhorn, overnight Zermatt

Fine – both are on the same sector of the mountain

Given the above, you can look at 3 days not 4 to cover it

    Hi Narelle ,

If you are going to the Kleine Matterhorn, the cable car ride goes right through Schwarzee. You can continue up to the Kleine, or get off there and spend some time, or get back on to continue, your choice. I got off at Schwarzee on my way down to take some photos but didn’t stay too much longer than that because I was on my way to the Gornergrat after it. (You can do both the Gonergrat and Kleine Matterhorn in one day also, depending on how much hiking and such takes place at each, but probably best to start out early in the day.) The train to Montreux only takes about two and a half hours. I would recommend going to Montreux and spending some time there. I only spent one night in Montreux and wished I had spent more than that. (I will be come next September.) Beautiful city to walk around the lake-front and lots to do in the area. As I recall from a previous post, you will be spending 5 weeks in Switzerland, (I so envy you!) I would spend some of it in Montreux. Hope you have a fantastic journey.

Thanks for all the replies, you guys are gems, so helpful.

Will do Schwarzsee and Klein Matterhorn on the one day then. Yep, we have 5 weeks Danielsan, and while I now realise it will probably (no, definitely) break the bank, we’re really looking forward to it!

When we travel we like to see as much as possible, and go for as long as possible, especially since down here in Australia we’re a long way from a lot of places, hence the 5 weeks. And it’s a big wide world out there with so many places to travel!

    Thanks again,

    Narelle

    Hi Norelle,

Break away at the bank…. I hope you have a wonderful time, as I’m sure you will. I do hope you spend some time in Montreux. It’s a beautiful walking area and the vineyards, castle Chillon, the Rochers de Naye, even the Glacier 3000 is within reach.
