Hi! I’m 32 and planning a trip to Switzerland in early July. My top priorities are wildflower blooms, waterfalls, and big alpine scenery. I’d love to do a 2-night hut-to-hut (or a 2-night base in huts with day hikes), then build the rest of my itinerary from there.

So far, Lauterbrunnen is high on my list for the waterfalls. With so many incredible regions, I’d love advice on:

    • How you choose what to include vs. skip (especially if I have ~7–10 days)

    • Best areas for early July wildflowers + iconic views

    • Favorite 2-night hut-to-hut routes (T2 preferred, but open to options)

    • Booking tips for huts + Airbnbs/hotels (when to book, what towns make the best bases, any “wish I knew this” tips)

Any recommendations or sample routes would be super appreciated—thank you so much! 🇨🇭🌼🏔️

    Hi NCT Traveler,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Lauterbrunnen is a good base for the activities you plan to do in July.

    https://www.myswissalps.com/town/lauterbrunnen/

There are plenty of hiking trails in the area and the famous Staubbach Waterfalls and Trummelbach Falls are easily accessible on foot from the village centre. You can hike or take the funicular to Almendhubel above Mürren (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/murren/) to see wildflowers and take the cable car to Schilthorn (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/). At the top, you’ll have an amazing view of the Bernese Alps from the platform and the rotating restaurant. There’s a James Bond exhibition too. Mid-station Birg offers a suspended viewing platform and the exciting Thrill Walk.

For recommendations on hut-to-hut routes, you might want to look up the Via Alpina from Lauterbrunnen to Kandersteg or check out the Switzerland Mobility App (which offers practical information about hiking trail in Switzerland) – https://www.myswissalps.com/activities/hiking/maps/

Feel free to explore our accommodation guide for more tips: https://www.myswissalps.com/accommodation/

    Hope this gets you started!

    Regards,
    Anna

    Hello NY Traveler

I fell in love with hiking in the Bernese Oberland region several years ago.  I have come to this beautiful area to hike (usually 12 days or so) five times since 2018.

From Lauterbrunnen, you could plan on going up to the Rotstock Hut.  I would suggest that you take the gondola from Lauterbrunnen up to Grütschalp (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/lauterbrunnen-murren/#intro).  From there, you could walk the beautiful Mountain View Trail to Mürren;  you have stunning panoramic views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau along nearly the entire stretch.  From Mürren, the approx. 2 1/2 hr hike up to the Rotstock hut is fabulous. You will most likely walk through grazing cows, with endless views of the majestic mountains around you. The Rotstock hut is a charming rustic little hut.

You could sleep at the Rotstock hut, and the next day head up the trail to the spectacular Sefinnenfurgee pass.  It is quite steep towards the end, with steep switchbacks.  There are stairs at the very end, but they are sturdy and secure. The view from the top is breathtaking!  From the top, you can decide to either hike to the amazing Gspalthorn hut, about a 1 ½ hike, or, hike down to quaint Griesalp, a small hamlet of several home and farms.   From the Gspalthorn hut, you can also hike down to Griesalp, approximately a 2 ½ hike. The views are fantastic everywhere!

Another gem of a place, although not a ‘hut’ is the lovely Obersteinberg Hotel. This chaming small family run Inn (and small farm) has limited electricity and accommodations are basic.  The hike to get there, from Mürren, Gimmelwald or Stechelberg, first leads you through a steady uphill climb through the forest, before opening up to a majestic panoramic view.   From the Obersteinberg Hotel, you can continue hiking up towards the Oberhornsee.  From there you could come back down on the ‘opposite` side of the valley (opposite the Obersteinberg Hotel).  (You should see signs for the  Schmadrihütte, an unstaffed hut.)  As you hike down this trail, you have constant beautiful views of Lauterbrunnen far below in the valley, which you get closer and closer to, as you descend.

I hope this information might help you a bit as you prepare your trip.

    Wishing you a fabulous trip!

Early July is a wonderful time to see Alpine Wildflowers in the Bernese Oberland area.  The Alpine Wildflower display Garden at Schynige Platte (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schynige-platte/) is huge plus there are masses of wildflowers growing wild all around there.  The views from Schynige Platte of the Bernese Alps, Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald Valleys and Lakes Thun and Brienz from the ridge trail to Daube viewpoint are epic.  From Wilderswil (between Interlaken and Lauterbrunnen)  you take a cute little train (50 minutes) up to Schynige Platte and could spend a night in the traditional mountain hotel at Schynige Platte and set off for the Schynige Platte-Faulhorn-First the next morning (5-6 hour hike) or you could book a night at the Faulhorn hut and continue to First and Grindelwald the next morning.  Also you might consider staying in Grindelwald (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/grindelwald/) which is busy and touristic but a beautiful setting and well situated for getting around the whole area via public transport via trains, buses, cableways.  Easy to see the whole area from there in 7-10 days.  A very economical place to stay is the Jungfrau Lodge which has simple single rooms with shared bathrooms and good breakfast included for 60 CHF a night.
