7 days Zermatt & Interlaken in Sept with an infant

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland from September 18 to 27, starting in Zurich and ending in Paris. They are a family of three with a 13-month-old baby and want to visit Zermatt and Interlaken before heading to Paris. They are unsure whether to rent a car or use public transport and would appreciate advice on their itinerary and tips for traveling with an infant.

Key takeaways:
  • Travel by public transportation instead of renting a car, as it offers more flexibility and is easier with an infant.
  • Use the Swiss Travel Pass for convenient and cost-effective train travel.
  • Consider staying in apartment rentals instead of hotels for more affordable options, especially with a kitchen for preparing meals for the baby.

    Hi All,

We are planning to travel in Sept (18-27), arriving in Zurich from Singapore and leaving from Paris. We are a family of 3 (with a 13 months old baby) and planning to spend 6-7 solid days in Switz before going to Paris for the rests of the trip.

We have a rough plan to visit Zermatt and Interlaken before taking train to Paris from Geneva. We are also thinking to rent a car to go around, not sure if this will be a better option than taking trains considering we have an infant? Can I have some opinion/advice on this itinerary? Any tips are also welcome as this is our first Europe trip and with a baby as well. We are going to take it easy and hoping that this trip will be memorable!

Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Mcnath! I think Zermatt and the Interlaken region are great destinations. You’ll find lots of options for day trips through these links:

I’d definitely advise traveling by public transportation instead of renting a car. Please refer to myswissalps.com/carver sustrain. Even with an infant, train traveling should be pretty easy, and you’ll be quite flexible. A car can be a hindrance when it comes to parking and planning flexible day trips (as you’ll have to return to your starting point where the car is parked in all cases). Plus, you won’t be able to reach Zermatt with a car. You can use the timetable at myswissalps.com/timeta ble to plan your trips and read about rail passes at myswissalps.com/train/ ticketspasses/practica l/chooserailpass.

Please consult myswissalps.com/traint ickets/france for information on trains to Paris. Also, I’d like to refer to your previous topics, where quite some useful links have been provided: myswissalps.com/forum/ topic/9-day-swiss-alps-itinarary.

    HI Annika,

    Thanks for replying. 🙂

We are now also considering Lucern in our itinerary because we wanted to go to Kandersteg and Lake Ochinnesse. Do you think the schedule is doable?

Also, we are looking at accomodations in Lucern and Zermatt is quite expensive, do you have any tips where we can get a cheaper accomodations? We’d prefer to have a kitchen so we can cook baby’s meal as well.

    Thanks.

    Hello Mncnath,

You will find out about do-ability of your days by using the timetable below.

Lucerne is a wonderful place, no question, whereas Kandersteg is just as easily reached from Interlaken:

You might want to look at “rentals” rather than at “hotels”, alternatively AirBnB might be an option, whereas it’s one we have certains doubts about. Read:
