Individual tickets vs.Swiss Rail Pass for 7days

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a week-long train trip in Switzerland, starting in Zurich and covering multiple destinations like Basel, Interlaken, Zermatt, St. Moritz, Lugano, and Lucerne. They are uncertain about whether to buy individual tickets or a Swiss Travel Pass that could simplify their travel and save money.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited train travel and discounts on some journeys.
  • If you choose the Swiss Travel Pass, note that seat reservations for scenic trains like the Glacier, Bernina, and Gotthard Panorama Express are separate costs.
  • It's unnecessary to travel 1st class; 2nd class is comfortable and a good option for your trip.

I am trying to understand which will be the best way for me to buy tickets or passes for my train trip——–this definitely is a work in progress.

Day 1———–Arriving in Zurich–2 nights in Zurich

Day 2——-Will take the train to Basel for a day trip

Day 3—–Will take the train from Zurich to Interlaken——–spend one night Interlaken

Day 4———Train from Interlaken to Zermatt———–2 nights in Zermatt–one day will do the Matterhorn

Day 5———Will take the Glacier Express———Zermatt———St. Moritz—one night in St. Moritz

Day 6———–Will take the Bernini Express—-St. Moritz–Lugano—2 nights in Lugano–one day take the train to Lake Como

Day 7—–Will take the Gotthard Panorama Express—Lugano–Lucerne—2 nights in Lucerne–one day take the train to Bern

I am very confused about the Swiss Passes———-do I buy individual train tickets? do I buy first class tickets?

    Hello Sparkyenos,

I don’t think there’s any reason to travel 1st class in Switzerland, 2nd class is for sure comfortable enough:

Regarding rail passes or individual tickets for your itinerary I would suggest to look into one of two passes, for sure offering some savings.

    1. the Swiss Travel Pass, covering practically all your journeys and offering discounts on the rest.

    2. Swiss Half Fare Card providing you with a 50% discount on practically all journeys.

Find detailed validity of the two in the “Where it’s valid” tab and purchase options in the “price” tab.

Once you’ve mapped out a detailed itinerary you can use the spreadsheet in this link for detailed calculations:

You don’t say when you are travelling but note you will need seat reservations for the Glacier, Bernina and Gotthard Panorama Express trains.

I am thinking this trip will be next year- I wanted to do all the research & make sure I all the needed information. I am aware that I will need to make separate reservations for the other train trips

one question I do have is if I buy the Swiss travel pass do I get a discount on these other train tickets

    Thanks

The Express train ticket prices are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass but not the seat reservations. That is an additional charge. All the major express train routes can also be followed on regular regional trains without reservations.
