Travelling to Swiss Alps with 1 year old baby

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a trip to Switzerland with their 1-year-old toddler from September 23rd for 8 nights, spending time in Interlaken, Lucerne, and Zurich. They want to know if popular tourist spots like Mt. Titlis and Mt. Pilatus are baby-friendly and are concerned about the weather and traveling with a toddler on cable cars and trains.

Key takeaways:
  • Cable cars and trains are generally baby-friendly, but be cautious of crowds as they may not be ideal for your baby.
  • Consult your doctor before taking your toddler to high altitudes like Jungfraujoch or Glacier 3000 due to the risk of altitude sickness.
  • Consider staying in valley towns like Brienz for a milder climate instead of mountain villages.
  • Zermatt has more attractions compared to Gstaad, both should be suitable for your infant.

Hi Sbhlsur, and welcome to MySwissAlps!

Cable cars and trains are baby friendly, but not especially equipped to accomodate babies. In other words if crowded the situation will not be ideal for your baby, but you can be optimistic.

I suggest you consult your doctor before going to high altitudes such as Jungfraujoch or Glacier 3000. People of all ages are subject to mountain sickness (because of the sudden change in altitude) so with your baby you may want to be on the safe side.

The weather forecast for 23rd September and beyond is not available yet. I consider September as the most beautiful month in Switzerland, but yes, it can definitely rain.

    Hi Abhisur,

Mount Pilatus is lower than Titlis, so safer. It’s up to you and your doctor to make the decision. Please find more details here:

If you don’t like cold you can best pick a town in the valley, not in the mountains. But there are no guarantees for the weather. The town of Brienz might be an option for you: http://www.myswissalps.com/br ienz.

Zermatt is higher than Gstaad but both should be just fine for your child.

I think there is more for you to see and do in Zermatt. Have a read through our web pages on those towns here to see for yourself what looks best for your family:
