A traveler named Pankaj94 is looking for the best train route from Zurich Airport to Zermatt. They want to know the quickest options and any scenic alternatives to enhance their journey.
Key takeaways:
For the quickest route, travel from Zurich Airport to Visp via Bern and the Lötschberg base tunnel, then take a regional train to Zermatt.
For a scenic option, travel through Lucerne and Bern, entering 'Lucerne' as a via-station in the timetable.
Consider the GoldenPass route through Lucerne and Interlaken for lovely views, changing at 'Interlaken Ost' if desired.
If you have an entire day, try the Glacier Express route from Zurich to Zermatt, which is easier with recent train improvements.

The quickest route is what’s proposed in the timetable by default: from Zurich Airport (called “Zurich Flughafen” in the timetable) to Visp via Bern and the Lötschberg base tunnel, then the regional train from Visp to Zermatt: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.
More scenic, and longer, alternatives include:
Travel via Lucerne and Bern. The train stretch Lucerne-Bern in the Emmen valley is very appealing. Enter “Lucerne” as a via-station in the timetable to see details.
Change to the Lötschberger RegioExpress in Bern, which doesn’t use the Lötschberg base tunnel but crosses the mountains: https://www.myswissalps.com/lotschberger. It can be found in the timetable if you enter “Kandersteg” as a via-station.
Don’t travel via Bern, but via Lucerne and Interlaken, using the northern leg of the GoldenPass route: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere. You can then board the RegioExpress Lötschberger in Spiez if you like. Enter “Lucerne”, “Interlaken Ost” (and “Kandersteg” if you’re interested in the RegioExpress Lötschberger) as via-stations for this option.
So it all depends on how much time you have available and what you prefer. I hope this gets you started!
This question crops up frequently (it ought to be in the web site ‘FAQs!’)
Last time it cropped up I gave th ethree routes already offered.
However there is a fourth alternative if you have all day:
Zurich – Goeschenen – Andermatt – Brig – Zermatt
This traverses what everyone calls the ‘Glacier Express route’, but in fact it is easier to do it by regular trains as MGB in recent years has made Goeschenen – Andermatt – Brig into a single train with no need to change, so you can get to Zermatt this way with only two changes of train (at Goeschenen and Brig)
