Day 10 – Tuesday 12th September
Caught the train to Brienz in the morning, stored my luggage at the train station instead of checking into my accommodation. This was because i wouldn’t have sufficient time to catch the first cruise at 10.30 am and because its no longer the summer timetable, there are less frequent. Small price to pay (CHF 5).
I took a short cruise to Giessbach falls. Weather was cloudy and drizzling, but a waterproof jacket would sort it out. Did the short hike to the Grandhotel and grand it was with beautiful furnishing and décor. Did a hike up along the waterfall including behind a section of one of the falls. There was a couple of intervals with sun which was really nice. Checked out the menu and decided to have lunch at the Grandhotel as it was not pricey for a Grandhotel and had a good view of the waterfalll while also hiding from the drizzle. I read on a blog (moms tots zurich) that the food was actually pretty good and reasonably priced. I agree.

Caught the boat towards Iseltwald. Guess who i met on the boat ? It was the elderly hiker from the day before when we were on the hiking trail high above Brienz Lake towards Schynige Platte. I spoke to him and he was just taking a leisurely cruise day on Brienz to Interlaken. I got off shortly at Iseltwald and explored around a bit, which was really quiet place. Took the bus to Interlaken Ost and walked around a bit. Checked out Du Nord Hotel, which i remember was the hotel i stayed at 15 years ago, when i was 11.
Caught the train to Brienz and took my luggage and headed to Brienz Youth Hostel which was by the lake. Shared the 6 bed dorm room with another person, Swiss – Canadian called Adrian who is on a 30 day trip in Switzerland. He is from Quebec, Canada and we chatted for a while. Our room had access to the rooftop terrace which overlooked the lake.
That night was a clear night, and will never forget seeing so many stars in the night sky from the rooftop terrace, but it was too cold to stay out for too long even with a puffer jacket and also had an early start the next day to Trift suspension bridge. I have lived in large cities all my life and never had a chance of seeing a night sky with stars due to the light pollution. The hostel manager Guido, was kind enough to prepare breakfast earlier specially for me as I needed to leave earlier (6.45am) than the standard breakfast time which was much appreciated.
Next up : Triftbrucke
