A traveler named Forgetmenot is planning a two-week trip to Switzerland, flying into Zurich and out of Milan, while wanting to include Milan and Lake Como in their itinerary. They seek advice on the best cities to stay in, optimal day trips, and transportation options without renting a car.
Key takeaways:
Stay in Lucerne and Interlaken for great access to mountains and day trips to Zurich and Bern.
Consider the 15-day Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited train travel across Switzerland.
Grindelwald is a beautiful option for 1-2 nights, offering stunning views and easy access to nearby mountains.
The journey from Geneva to Milan is quickest via Brig, not Lugano, which makes it an inconvenient stop.

Can you please help with itineraries for two weeks trip at Switzerland and also include few days at Milan and possibly Lake Como area. I am flying in Zurich and flying out Milan ( I can change it if it’s not doable). I will not rent a car.
I am thinking on staying overnights at Zurich, Lucerne and Geneva. Please advise if these cities are ok to stay for day trips to mountain areas.
Thank you for these links! I am so newbie to all this planning. I still have questions as I try to minimise base cities to make day trips to mountains as I don’t want to travel with luggage all the time. I would like to go to mountains but I am not too comfortable to walk on narrow cliffs.
I am thinking Zurich -2 nights;
Lucerne -2 – 3 nights nights
Bern- ?
Does it make sense to stay overnight/s in Bern, or everything can be done from Lucerne?
Do I have to stay at Interlaken or can do it as day trips from above cities?
If you are interested in scenic mountain excursions, I recommend choosing a base in Lucerne and Interlaken. From Lucerne, you can also do day trips to Zurich and Bern. Adding Geneva to your itinerary is a good option if you plan to explore the Lake Geneva area (Montreux, Lavaux vineyards).
Below are some useful links to give you some sightseeing ideas for your trip:
Interlaken is a good base for exploring the Jungfrau region. From Interlaken you can also do day trip to Bern. Lucerne on the other hand is a good base to explore the central region especially the areas around Lake Lucerne and mountains such as Pilatus and Titlis. Also, Zurich is only about an hour train ride from Lucerne, so perfect for a day trip.
There are regular train connections from Geneva to Milan. You might have to switch trains once or twice. You can check train schedules on the SBB timetable. You can find more information about train tickets to Italy here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy
Yes, with the Swiss Travel Pass you can travel for free to Lucerne, Grindelwald and Geneva. The Swiss Travel Pass is valid throughout Switzerland. You can download the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity
