7 days Luzern, Zermatt & Grindelwald in September

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is visiting Switzerland and France for the first time with a group of friends from September 12 to 22, spending 6 nights in Switzerland. They are seeking advice on their itinerary, which includes stops in Luzern, Zermatt, and Grindelwald, and looking for tips on transportation options and the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose Luzern, Zermatt, and Grindelwald as bases, but consider alternatives like Mürren or Wengen depending on your interests.
  • You can either take the Glacier Express or a regular train from Andermatt to Zermatt.
  • If the 8-day Swiss Travel Pass is too costly, consider a 4-day pass or Save Day Pass for the days you plan to travel.

Hi everyone. I will be going to Switzerland and France with my friends (group of 3) for the first time from 12 Sep to 22 Sep. we plan to spend 6 nights in Switzerland and the rest is Paris. Would like to check if my itinerary in Switzerland is in order? All suggestions welcome!

Day 01 – Arrive at Zurich Airport at 13:20 > Luzern (overnight Luzern)

Day 02 – Luzern lake/ Rigi (overnight Luzern)

Day 03 – Take Glacier Express from Andermatt > Zermatt (overnight Zermatt)

Day 04 – Matterhorn Paradise (overnight Zermatt)

Day 05 – Lauterbrunnen / Murren (overnight Grindelwald)

Day 06 – Jungfraujoch round trip (overnight Grindelwald)

Day 07 – Grindelwald > Bern > train to Paris

    1. Am I choosing the right bases for my trip (Luzern/Zermatt/Grindelwald)? I still can change as I haven’t book any accommodation yet.

    2. Kindly suggest anywhere else worth visiting or anywhere on my itinerary that I could skip

    3. Can I join Glacier Express from Andermatt or just take regular train to Zermatt?

    4. Any other options other than buying a 8-days Swiss Travel Pass (8-days pass is quite costly as we only stay for 6 days)

    Thank you for help

Hi Calvin88 and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

Nice to hear you’re coming along to explore some of Switzerland.

1- I think the bases you choose are perfect, whereas in the Grindelwald area some people would opt for Murren, Wengen or maybe Interlaken, depending on interests:

    The choice is yours! 🙂

    2. I think you’re itinerary is nicely paced and doesn’t need a lot of amendment, to get inspiration about alternative activities at your destinations type them into the search bar of this page. For example you could visit Mount Pilatus instead of Mount Rigi from Lucerne, but that’s just an idea.

    3. Both works. Use the timetable and below links for details on how to best get from Lucerne to Zermatt. Check out the “combining Gotthard Panorama Express with Glacier Express” section in the second link:

    4. You could look at the Save Day Pass for two days and opt for a 4 day Swiss Travel Pass, depending on what you do on these days this might work out. Alternatively, though often not quite appropriate for shorter stays, the Swiss Half Fare Card might be worth a glance.
