Hike to restaurant near Grindelwald

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is looking for a hike in Grindelwald, ideally between 6-8 miles, with a restaurant along the way. They also want suggestions for activities in case of rainy weather, as they're visiting in early September for a few days.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider hiking from Schynige Platte to First and having lunch at Faulhorn, as it's a scenic route with dining options.
  • Visit nearby cities like Bern or Lucerne if weather is bad, and check out the Swiss Transport Museum in Lucerne.
  • Use public transport to access hiking spots easily; Kleine Scheidegg and Schynige Platte are reachable by train, while Waldspitz is accessible by bus.
  • Explore Lake Brienz or Lake Thun on a rainy day, as ferries operate even in overcast weather.

    Hi,

I’m looking for a suggestion on a hike from Grindelwald (maybe several hours total, 6-8 miles long) with a place to eat lunch in the middle…I hiked in the region before and remember there being restaurants/cafes that were only accessible on foot. Any suggestions? The route can involve a tram or gondola for part of it or to reach a trailhead.

Also, we’ll be based in Grindelwald for a few days. Does anyone have a suggestion for what to do if we get a rainy day? We don’t mind getting caught in the rain on a hike, but if an all day rain is predicted, perhaps we could do something other than a hike.

This will be the first part of September so in just a few weeks!

    Thanks!

I would suggest hiking from Schynige Platte to First and having lunch at Faulhorn which is about 2/3 the way to first. The hike is 15 Km and takes about 6 hrs.

also a nice outdoor restaurant at Waldspitz. depending on where you start and where you end you can make it a short or long hike. One possibility is starting at Grosse Scheidegg to First to Bachalpsee to Waldspitz to Bort. Or Waldspitz to Bussalp to make it longer. If you go in the other direction there is an outside restaurant at Grosse Scheidegg too.

Alpiglen has a nice restaurant. Perhaps Kleine Scheidegg to Eigergletscher to Alpiglen (lunch) then continue down to Grindelwald.

    Hi Terry,

in case of bad weather you can visit bigger cities close to the Jungfrau region like Bern (http://www.myswissalps.com/bern) or Lucerne (http://www.myswissalps.com/lucerne). There is a great museum near Brienz, called the Ballenberg Open Air Museum. In case of small rain you can still visit it. Have a look at http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/best-route-to-open-air-museum-and-st-beatus-caves and http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/grindelwald-to-open-air-museum-via-boat.

In Lucerne I highly recommend the Swiss Transport Museum (http://www.myswissalps.com/museumoftransport), in case you like museums 🙂

Perfect! I had a feeling the suggestion would be to hope on the train and check out some other towns. I wasn’t aware of those particular museums, so that’s very helpful. We can’t wait to get there and hope the airlines cooperate!

Also FYI. Grosse Scheidegg and Bussalp are accessible by bus which runs every hour from Grindelwald. Kleine Scheidegg and Schynige Platte are accessible by train. Bort and First accessible by Gondola. Waldspitz is also accessible by bus.

On a rainy or overcast day you may also consider exploring Lake Brienz or Lake Thun by ferry, Perhaps lunch at Brienz. Also a walk down Lauterbrunnen valley from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg and return by bus would still br nice even on an overcast day.

    Hi Terry,

Hotel-Restaurant Schwarzwaldalp might be another option: http://www.schwarzwaldalp.ch. Although not only accessible on foot, it’s in a rather remote valley between Grosse Scheidegg and Meiringen, with limited traffic. There’s a postbus that you could use one one-way to prevent backtracking.

    Here’s the route: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/grossescheidegg-meiringen.

    Hi Terry,

You can also take the gondola to Pfingstegg and hike to the Bäregg Hut and Restaurant (about 5 km). Or from the top of the Pfingstegg station you can follow the trail to the Marmorbruch Berghaus and continue to the Gletscherschlucht (glacier canyon). The canyon is a great place to visit in any weather including rainy days as the whole walkway is covered. You can also find a restaurant there and there’s a bus service from Grindelwald if you prefer not to hike.

    Regards,

    Anna
