Is Mother”s Day in Switzerland (Wengen) busy day?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland in early May and is concerned about celebrating Mother's Day on May 10th. They wonder if towns, restaurants, and trains will be busy since it's a family day. They are considering making reservations at their chosen hotel in Wengen, which charges more for that weekend.

Key takeaways:
  • Expect most shops to be closed on Mother's Day, but tourist cities like Lucerne and Interlaken may have some open.
  • Make restaurant reservations in advance since many Swiss families dine out for the occasion.
  • Consider buying a unique flower bouquet for your mum from local florists to make her day special.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is a great option for convenient train travel, but trains are typically not very crowded on Sundays.

I am hoping to be in Switzerland early May 2020 and have noticed that Mother’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday 10 May. I have also noted our preferred hotel in Wengen opens that weekend but charges an increased rate for the weekend.

Whilst it would be lovely to celebrate the day, are towns/restaurants/trains likely to be busy with families taking mums out that day? Many thanks for any information. By the way we are coming from Thailand where Mother’s Day is celebrated on 12 August, the Queen’s birthday.

    Hello Sweyne,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps!

Mother’s Day in Switzerland is Sunday May 10th, 2020. A vast majority of the shops are closed on Sundays to begin with. Unless you go to tourist cities like: Lucerne or Interlaken, there you will find more shops open but not a whole lot. The trains are running, and you usually don’t find many people on there either because again it is Sunday.

I have included some links about Lucerne, Interlaken and Wengen in case you decide to go to any of those places with your mum.

    Lucerne:

    Interlaken:

In case your mum is missing Thai food while traveling, there is an authentic Thai restaurant in Interlaken. They do sometimes take special requests, such as having softshell crab in the papaya salad. The restaurant is called “Little Thai” and they get super busy in the evening, so it’s advisable to make reservations.

    Wengen:

The restaurants will be busier than normal because many of the Swiss families like to treat their mums out for lunch/dinner. I recommend making a reservation at the restaurant though! Perhaps also consider buying a flower bouquet for your mum at any of one of the florists in Switzerland. They have beautiful and unique creations that I’m sure your mum would love!

    I hope that helps!

    Best regards,

    Suzanne
