Best mountain views Matterhorn and Jungfrau region

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Zermatt at the end of June, traveling via the Glacier Express from Chur. They will spend 2 nights and seek advice on the best spots for capturing pictures of the Matterhorn, especially concerning timing and reflections. They also plan to visit Lauterbrunnen for 3 nights and want recommendations for photographing the Eiger, Jungfrau, and Monch.

Key takeaways:
  • Visit Riffelalp for great views of the Matterhorn, with easy access from the Gornergratbahn and a nearby lake for reflections.
  • Early morning is generally best for photography, but be aware of potential weather changes in the late afternoon.
  • For the Eiger and Jungfrau, explore Kleine Scheidegg for close views and Schynige Platte for panoramic shots.
  • Riffelsee is a good spot for reflection photos; consider hiking routes from Riffelalp to enhance your photography opportunities.

I traveling to Zermatt at the end of June via the Glacier Express from Chur. I will spent 2 nights in Zermatt. If the weather cooperates, should I go to Rothorn, Gornegrat , Sunnegga, Schwarzsee or elsewhere to get the best pictures of the Matterrhorn. Also, is it better to go early in the morning, late afternoon, or anytime. And what lake gives the best reflection.

I am also going to Lauterbrunnen, for 3 nights, do you have any recommended camera shot locations for the Eiger, Jungfrau, Monch. My plan was to stay on the Schilthorn side, but I can change.

Any suggestions would be appreciated, this is my first trip to Switzerland.

    Hi Jcopel,

Sunnegga and Gornergrat both offer excellent views: http://www.myswissalps.com/go rnergrat. Riffelsee, Stellisee and possibly others are good for reflection photography. Here are some hikes along lakes:

Time of the day depends on the weather as well as what kind of images you’d like to take (back-light or different). In general later in the day increases the chance of haze or rain, but it could be the other way round as well.

The Schilthorn itself (http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hilthorn) is a good place for photography, as well as mid station Birg. But also walking from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg will work: http://www.myswissalps.com/hi king/maennlichen-kleinescheidegg. Schynige Platte as well for a perspective from a bit farther away: http://www.myswissalps.com/sc hynigeplatte.

    HI Jcopel

I’ve hiked over much of Zermatt area and I thought the best view of the Matterhorn was from Riffelalp. It’s about 2 or 3 stops up the Gornergratbahn from Zermatt. You will have a 5 minute walk from the train stop to the front lawn of the Riffelalp Resort. The altitude and proximity are very good for photos of the Matterhorn in my opinion. Much better than either Gornergrat summit or Sunnegga. See my thumbnail taken at sunrise from Riffelalp.

I believe you can get a good reflection photo from Riffelsee. We passed several small lakes on our hike from Riffelalp to Riffelsee that would be suitable.

For a close up and upward view of the Matterhorn consider Zmutt. You can take the gondola from the far end of Zermatt up to a point about 15 minutes from Zmutt

I have not been to the Klein Matterhorn area so I can’t comment on it’s view.

As for Jungfrau and Eiger, I agree with Arno. Kleine Scheidegg has a good close up view and Schynige Platte a good panoramic view. For a very close view consider the Eigergletscher train stop, It is a little different perspective as well. If your up for it the Eiger trail takes you to the base of the Eiger.

I would also highly recommend a photo of Lauterbrunnen Valley from either Murren or the train station at Wengen.

Don’t go to Rothorn or Sunegga (same mountain) for views of the Matterhorn as you are further away. Classic views are from the Gornergrat railway and surrounding fields, or on the Schwarzsee side for closer views.
