Swiss Christmas itinerary on a budget

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland during Christmas, flying into Zurich and staying in Bern for 4 nights. They are looking for budget-friendly activities and have a flexible itinerary that includes exploring Bern, day trips to Zermatt, Interlaken, and Grindelwald, and want advice on whether to get a Swiss Travel Pass or Eurail Pass for transportation.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the opening hours of attractions and Christmas markets in Bern during the Christmas period to avoid disappointment.
  • Consider getting the Swiss Travel Pass for unlimited travel in Switzerland, especially with the current 30% discount for a 4-day pass.
  • Be flexible with your day trips to accommodate for weather changes, as conditions can vary in the mountains.
  • Look for affordable accommodations in Bern to keep your budget in check.
  • Explore winter activities suitable for beginners, like sledging, which can provide a great experience without breaking the bank.

Hello everyone, I am planning to visit Switzerland over the Christmas period. I have never visited Switzerland, and have barely visited Europe. So I’m overwhelmed with planning the itinerary, would really appreciate any tips/ recommendations!

I will be flying into Zurich on 24th morning, and am planning to stay in Bern for 4 nights (as it’s one of the more affordable accommodations I could find). As I am budget conscious, I am not sure what would be the most ‘worth it’ itinerary. The activities I really want to fit in are: sledging (or some ‘beginner friendly’ winter activity), see nice sceneries/ get some Christmas vibes. Otherwise I’m pretty flexible – I don’t mind skipping the expensive peaks, not skiing, etc.

So far, this is my plan:

24th Dec: Explore Bern, visit Christmas market

25th Dec: Day trip to Zermatt, if weather is good

26th Dec: Day trip to Interlaken, possibly take a boat ride across Lake Brienz.

27th Dec: Day trip to Grindelwald, do First Cliff Walk

(Note: I might switch the day trips around, depending on the weather)

28th Dec: Explore Bern, take train to France

Would love to know if there would be enough open in these places over the Christmas period? Or should I visit other places instead?

Wondering if I should get a Swiss Travel Pass or Eurail Pass for this? Or no pass? I don’t mind skipping the boat ride across Lake Brienz. I am below 27 years old, so Eurail has a discount. I know Swiss Travel Pass is having a 30% discount for the 4-day pass currently.

Thanks so much for all the help!
