    Hi,

Thank you for letting me to become a member in MySwissAlps.com. I am planning to visit Switzerland (my Bucket list) from my last leg of the trip which is from Munich on May 26 and end on Zurich June 5 to fly back to Toronto.

I’d like to visit Lucern (Mt. Pilatus or Mt. Rigi) for 2 nights, Jungfrau area (Interlaken, Grindlewald, Jungfraujoch etc) for 5 days, Zermatt for 1-2 days, Zurich (may be Liechtenstein day trip, if possible).

Any input what is the itinerary in term of efficiency and cost wise?.

    Thanks

    Hi ChrisK,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Based on your interests, a sensible plan would be to travel to Zermatt directly from Zurich, then travel to Interlaken followed by Lucerne and finally Zurich. You can plan a day trip to Liechtenstein from Zurich.

You might want to consider getting a railpass. In terms of convenience and flexibility, the Swiss Travel Pass is the best option. You can find further details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass

Hi Anna, Thank for the response. Great idea to go to Zermatt. I guess, I need to go to Zurich from Munich, purchase STP, continue to Zermatt?. Or any other way to Zermatt from Munich?

We will stay in Switzerland for 10 days, but the STP option is 8 or 15 days. No 10 days Pass?. Or better Half-Fare Pass ?.

    Thanks again

Munich – Zermatt direct route is via Zurich and Bern, so you can actually do the trip either way round. (by the way there isn’t that much to see in Leichstenstein). There is one (slow) alternative: Munich – St Margrethen – Chur – Andermatt – Zermatt.

I recommend trying an 8 day STP Flex and avoid using public transport on a couple of carefully chosen days – ways to achieve the latter include:

    • you might get the local buses free with your accomodation if you stay in Interlaken
    • save a day by just walking around above Zermatt village
    • save a day by just walking around Grindelwald / Wengen (if you stay in that area)

On balance, I think I would do Munchen – Zurich – Luzern on day 1 (you could possibly save an STP day here by getting a cheap Munchen – Zurich ticket from German Railway and a point to point ticket for the short journey Zurich – Luzern

    Hi ChrisK,

It might be good to know that the price difference between an 8- and a 15-day Swiss Travel Pass is only CHF 40: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/price. So even if you won’t be using all of the 15 travel days, it can still make sense to consider this option.

    Thanks for the responses.

Still debating between STP and HFP. Cost different is huge.

Which one is better Jungfrau Pass or Bernese Pass?

Can you go to Montreux from Interlaken Day trip?

I will stay in Interlaken for 5 days

Can you go to St. Moritz from Zermatt Day trip?

I will stay in Zermatt for 3D2N. Is it too aggressive to see Matterhorn and Gorsergrat?

    Thanks again

    Hi ChrisK,

I hope your trip planning is going well.

Indeed the Swiss Travel Pass cost substantially more than the Swiss Half Fare Card. However with the Swiss Travel Pass you don’t have to worry about buying tickets for each trip and you you can be more flexible with your plans. A Swiss Half Fare Card might be a good option if you are combining it with a regional pass such as the Jungfrau Travel Pass or the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland. If you are staying in Interlaken for 5 days, you might want to consider getting a Regional Pass Bernese Oberland. This pass covers has a bigger coverage and allows you to travel freely to more destinations. The pass also provides discounts for travel up to Montreux. You can find further details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/regionalpassberneseoberland/validity

So yes, you can plan a day trip to Montreux from Interlaken. There is now a direct service on the Golden Pass between Interlaken and Montreux. More details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass

Spending 3D2N in Zermatt gives you more time to explore Zermatt. It’s not possible to climb the Matterhorn but you can have a closer look by taking the cogwheel train to Gornergrat or the cable car to Klein Matterhorn.

From Zermatt, you can travel directly to Chur on the Glacier Express but not recommended as a day trip (although not impossible). It is an 8-hour journey. You can find description of the route here: http://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/gettingthere

If you’re planning day trips from Zermatt, I recommend destinations such as Brig or Saas Fee. You can find more options here: http://www.myswissalps.com/zermatt/activities

You cannot go Zermatt – St Moritz and back as a day trip – it takes all day to go one way.

It is far from ‘aggressive’ to ‘do Matterhorn and Gornergrat in one day’ – especially as you actually see the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat trip. It is possible to do the Matterhorn Glacier area and the Gornergrat railway in one day.
