Hello Friends,
We are planning 7 nights trip to Swiss. We want to do natural sites and scenic tour.
Arriving Zurich on Day 1.
Day 1 – Lucern
Day 2 – First half in Lucern ( Mount Pilatus by cable car) Must and later to Interlaken
Day 3 – Trip to Jungfraujoch and Gridenwald ( Must)
Day 4 – Montrex – Lausanne – Geneva
Day 5 – Zermatt ( Matter Horn Execursion) Must
Day 6 – Glacier Express and back to Zurich
Day 7 – Zurich and fly out
Is this trip doable and am I missing anything major or should I skip anything ?
Any guidance is highly appreciated.
Regards,
Hrishi

Hi,
To my mind, your schedule looks crowded. You run into the danger of ticking off sights, but not having the time relax and enjoy. This is just my personal view and I could be wrong.
We travelled on Glacier Express recently from Brig to Chur. Apart from a small section near Andermatt, I couldn’t call the trip spectacular. You would anyway be taking several other train trips, which are likely to be equally scenic.Hope this helps
Enjoy the trip.Removed userParticipant72625 posts15 July 2019 at 5:55:01 #917783Your post doesn’t say where are your bases, the dates and time of your travel
Can you add those details please ?
Inspite of the missing info, it does look like am ambitious itinerary and as Nambi pointed out, you will be only travelling throughout the trip.
Mountain weather is unpredictable and you should ideally keep a buffer or a plan B for those days.
More responses after you provide details
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts15 July 2019 at 5:58:46 #917784Hello Hrishi and Welcome to MySwissAlps,
That’s a pretty busy plan. Don’t underestimate the amount of time consumed in moving from hotel to hotel and the challenge of carting luggage with you every day.
I would strongly recommend you use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel, find fares* and buy tickets if required. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. *SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, mobile app allows you to nominate full or half-fare and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass) if that offers the best fare.
As well as providing input into the decision making process as to whether you should buy a Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass) (or similar) it will give you an idea of how much time you will actually be spending sitting on trains.
You should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to all the available passes.
HrishiParticipant12 posts16 July 2019 at 0:54:38 #917785Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We did make certain changes and also providing some additional details wherever I know.
Arriving Zurich on Day 1.
Day 1 – arriving in Lucern around 4pm and Stay in Lucern
Day 2 – First half in Lucern ( Mount Pilatus by cable car) Must and leave for Interlaken around 3pm. Stay could be in Interlaken or Grindenwald.
Day 3 – Trip to Jungfraujoch and Gridenwald ( Must) and stay in interlaken or Gridenwald
Day 4 – Morning train to Montrex – Lausanne – Geneva ( I can consider skipping this if it is too busy or weather is not good for Jungfraujoch ) and stay in Lausanne or Montrex
Day 5 – Zermatt ( Matter Horn Execursion) Must and stay in Zermatt
Day 6 – Easy day in Zermatt ( I was thinking sitting in Glacier express also will be relaxing)
Day 7 – back to Zurich and day in Zurich
Day 8 – Fly out at 1 pm
Please let me know your thoughts. We are considering buying Swiss travel Pass.
ShroffchetanParticipant255 posts16 July 2019 at 3:04:40 #917786Hi
My suggestion will be as follows
Day 4 do not change base. Do a day visit from Interlaken or grindelwald. Why 3 places to visit in one day. Need to have sightseeing goal for this place
Also this will be a backup day for jungfraujoch if it is not feasible on day 3 due to weather. On mountain excursions you need to check weather
Day 5 and 6 again plan will be dependent on weather but good idea for sightseeing or hiking. I am not fond of scenic trains so not able to comment
Day 7 you can go to rheinfall or Zurich sightseeing
In Switzerland journey is destination. 8 days swiss travel pass will be a good idea
Removed userParticipant72625 posts16 July 2019 at 6:49:56 #917787For a 8 day itinerary, thinking of 5 bases is a very bad idea.
your post doesn’t say how many of you are travelling together and what is the age group of the travelers but moving 5 bases along with luggage isn’t a pleasant experience. If there are kids with you,the hassles increase by few more notches 🙂
Try to limit it to 2 bases or max 3.
My suggestion will be Lucerne, Interlaken / Grindelwald and Zurich.
When you choose a destination to visit, do read up about the place on this forum or elsewhere on internet and decide what do you want to. For e.g your plan for day 4 is only travelling back and forth in train without achieving anything. You would be better off skipping it and enjoy multiple options from your base in the jungfraujoch region
My suggestions for base will be as below. You could do day trips to places around these bases.. These will also give you buffer days incase weather plays spoilsport . Check out the web pages for the below places for Activities and the nearby places to visit from these bases.
Day 1 , 2 – Lucerne
Day 3,4, 5, 6 – Interlaken / Grindelwald
Day 7 – Zurich
Day 8 – Fly out of zurich

I would definitely also suggest to skip the “Montreux-Lausanne-Geneva” part of your itinerary and stay a night longer, either in Lucerne or Interlaken/grindelwald, as there is more than enough to do and see in both places.

StephHrishiParticipant12 posts18 July 2019 at 2:18:38 #917789Thanks for suggestions. We have cut down montreux – Geneva from the trip.
I would like to have boat cruise.
Where do you think it will be great?
Lucern or Thun or Zürich or any other suggestions ??
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts18 July 2019 at 3:23:33 #917790Seeing you already plan to go to Pilatus do the ‘Golden Round Trip’ to Pilatus – Take the boat from Lucerne to Alpnachstad. Change to the cogwheel train to the Pilatus. Then take the cable car down to Fräkmüntegg and change to the gondola to Kriens. It’s a 10 minute walk to the bus stop called ‘Kriens, Zentrum Pilatus’. There, you can take bus line 1 to the Lucerne rail station (15 minutes). See http://www.myswissalps.com/pi latus/gettingthere.
You get a lake cruise, a cable way and a cog-wheel railway all in the one excursion.
You can go either way around.
HrishiParticipant12 posts18 July 2019 at 23:56:31 #917791Thanks a ton Rocky.
Any tips for Zermatt, what should I cover in day trip? We have almost two full days. We are planning to do Matterhorn excursion. Anything else you suggest, which we should not miss.
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts19 July 2019 at 0:22:29 #917792The two major attractions are the train to Gornergrat and the Cableway to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (Klein Matterhorn).
HrishiParticipant12 posts19 July 2019 at 21:42:52 #917793Great suggestions, hearty thanks.
Any idea, whether all this local trains in Zermatt as well as interlaken are covered in Swiss travel pass.
Also what is a good website to purchase STP ? There are dozens coming up.
rockoysterParticipant8889 posts19 July 2019 at 21:47:09 #917794You can see where the Swiss Travel Pass is valid at http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/validity. Read the text as well as studying the map.
