Kleine Scheidegg – Lauterbrunnen via Eiger Express

Short summary – read this first

Sabby is planning a trip to Switzerland soon, with a base in Wengen. They’re interested in visiting Kleine Scheidegg and Lauterbrunnen and are looking for advice on the best routes and timing for their travel, especially with their Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:

Taking the train from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen is a great option as it’s quick and covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. If you want to ride the Eiger Express, consider going to Grindelwald Terminal first, then plan your route based on your desired stops. Always check ticket options at the station to ensure you have the correct fares for your journeys.

Hi, we have just less than two weeks to go before taking a long flight to Switzerland from down under. I’ve been putting the itinerary together and want to be a bit flexible. We may have change the itinerary around depending on how much time we have left on the day.We will be based in Wengen. On the day that we plan to go to Kleine Scheidegg. I’m thinking that we should have plenty of time to visit the waterfalls in Lauterbrunnen. So after Kleine Sheidegg I take the train to EIGERGLETSCHER then cable car on the EIGER EXPRESS (I’d like to experience the EIGER EXPRESS} to Grindelwald Terminal? From Grindelwald Terminal, do I take the train to Zweilütschinen then transfer to another train from Zweilütschinen to Lauterbrunnen? Or, is it faster to travel as follow? We have the Swiss travel pass, but we have to stop and pay the supplements for the trips below. Will this take much time?

Take a gondola from Grindelwald Terminal to Männlichen – 19 minutes.

Transfer to another gondola from Männlichen – Wengen – 5 minutes

Catch a train from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen – 13 minutes

    Kind regards

    Sabby

    Hi Sabby,

Yes, it’s much faster to travel from Männlichen/Kleine Scheidegg to Lauterbrunnen with the train via Wengen: https://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/gettingthere. If you wish to include the Eiger Express in your day trip, a possible option would be as follows:

Grindelwald Terminal – Eigergletscher via Eiger Express (discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass).

Eigergletscher to Kleine Scheidegg by train (discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass).

Optional: Hike on the Panorama trail from Kleine Scheidegg to Männlichen.

Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen by train then Wengen to Männlichen by cable car (discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass). Or you can directly travel to Lauterbrunnen by train from Wengen (this journey is covered by the Swiss Travel Pass).

You can purchase the discounted tickets directly from the ticket counter at Grindelwald Terminal. Be sure to inform the staff of your exact routes in order to get the correct tickets.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hello Anna.

I am planning to hike from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg.,Please correct me if I’m wrong. I’m getting a bit confused 🙁

If I want to include the Eiger Express after the walk from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg .

Should I take the train from Kleine Scheidegg station to Eigergletscher station first? (discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass)

Hop on the Eiger Express then get off at Grindelwald Terminal (discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass)

Gondola/cable car from Grindelwald Terminal to Männlichen (discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass)

Gondola/cable car from Männlichen – Wengen (discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass)

Train from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen (covered by the Swiss Travel Pass)

    Kind regards

    Hi Sabby,

Yes, this plan is of doable if you prefer to hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg instead of the other way around. After your hike, you can take the train to Eigergletscher, then ride the Eiger Express down to Grindelwald Terminal. At Grindelwald Terminal, take the gondola to Männlichen then cable car to Wengen, before continuing to Lauterbrunnen on the train.

You can check transportation schedules on the SBB timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

I will be in wengen as well so I will take train from wengen to mannlichen and then Grindelwald, then take train to eigerletscher and after you come down to kleine scheidegg then hike from here to Mannlichen ( easier as recommended) then back to wengen

    Hi Sabby,

I agree with Anna. If you’re based in Wengen, the most sensible thing for you to do is to take the gondola up to Mannlichen since it’s right in your front yard. Hike down to Kleine Scheidegg from there. If the weather is good, you will have a great view of the Eiger in front of you the whole entire time, and eventually, the Monch and Jungfrau will appear, too. From Kleine Scheidegg, take the train to Eigergletscher, then the Eiger ex to Grindelwald. Once there, you have the option of the train to Zweilutschinen, or, as you mentioned, the cable cars. Either way, it’s a circle. It just depends on whether you want to pay extra for the cable cars or take the train into Lauterbrunnen from G-wald. At the point of getting to G-wald, you will have seen most of the scenery, and the trains should be good since it’s only a bit over a half hour into Lauterbrunnen from there. (Obviously, the choice is yours to make.) Again, this way, it’s a circular route and slightly less expensive, as its two less cable cars to have to pay for, since you have the Swiss TP. Just something to think about. Have a great trip, whichever way you do choose to go.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

Depends where do you stay !

Yes my plan was from interlaken ~~> Grindelwald—> first —> hike the lake —> cliff walk —>back to Grindelwald —> lunch —> gondola up _> mannlichen—> royal walk—> hike to kleine scheidegg —>cable/ train to wegnen ( visit and dinner)

But now I moved my two out of 8 days from interlaken to wengen, wengen is very close to mannlichen , it might be different route if I am in wengen but I still try to hike the mannlichen panorama trail this way — mannlichen —> kleine scheidegg as it’s easier more downhill path for me !

now I realize you have STP which doesn’t cover much mountain cable and gondola 🚠 so you might have to go with the flow from where you station is! Get a map and to find the best route with the least paying price! I have BO pass so I can flipping route around and explore

hope you have a great trip and good weather ! Praying for all of us with good weather !

We’ll be staying at the Alpenrose hotel in one of their apartments in Wengen. We opted for the half board for five nights. Originally we were going to get BO pass + the half fare card during my early planning. More than 1 1/2 months ago we decided to add 3 nights in Zermatt (with a change fee for the airline ☹️)

Sorry I think I myself get confused at the time ! Yes mannlichen —> kleine Scheidegg is the way to go ( recommended as it’s down hill ) ! I had moved my base from interlaken to wengen so I am redo my circle now and that’s why I got mixed up ! Hope you have a great time ! Will be in wengen 9/28 ! Excited

That’s awesome! yeah staying in wengen is very central to jungfrau region !

I am so regret didn’t book straight all days in wengen and I booked 6 days in interlaken with 6 day BO pass first and later due to my work schedule change I had to move my days around so I reduced 3 days in Lucerne to 1 day so now I have two extra day so I booked in wengen and with a 8 day pass !

we too will go from interlaken to montreux and then to zermatt ! Too bad the peak to peak is not available and I think rothorn is also closed on 10/1 so my three nights and two days are more than enough there ! Hope we will have good weather there as well !

Enjoy your trip and hiking !

    Hi fionatravel,

You won’t regret having changed your base to Wengen at all. It is a beautiful village and it is fairly central to most of the region. Only a 13 min train ride to Lauterbrunnen, which is only 20 min to Interlaken Ost, which is a hub to both there, and the whole region in general. If you are based in Wengen, I would recommend the same route I suggested to Sabby. Again, the Eiger in front of you the whole time. Once at Kleine Scheidegg, you can decide where/how to go from there. You can hike both First and the Mannlichen/Kleine Scheidegg trail, but be aware that it’s a long day. More power to you if you can pull it off.

As far as Zermatt goes, even if you are unable to see the Rothorn, (I just read the link provided by Yolanda, and it looks like a go in early Oct). The Gornergrat is definitely worth seeing. Lots of hiking and sightseeing to be done there for sure. I would recommend that over the Glacier Pararise. However, that is just my opinion. But if you have three days, it can be worth it to hike around that area (Glacier Paradise area). You can hop on/hop off along the ride and hike all you want to as long as you buy the return ticket. The day can be spent hiking around that area. Im heading to Rothorn in about ten days and can’t wait. Both upon Lake Brienz, and high above Zermatt. (Hoping weather is good for both)

Have a great trip wherever you

go to. May be good weatyer follow you.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

    Hi Sabby,

I believe the extra fee of changing your airline ticket will be worth it to see Zermatt. It is the iconic mountain of Switzerland (Matterhorn), and I believe one shouldn’t miss the opportunity to see it of one can. Especially if never been there before. I’ll he heading back there next week and am so looking forward to it. Try not to miss the Gornergrat. The views of the glaciers and the hiking and scenery are breathtaking. Your itinerary is very similar to mine, except that I am going into and out of Zurich. Enjoy Lake Como. Have a great trip.

That’s my worst fear as I would like to spend more time in montreux / Lausanne ! But I am planning on buy my super saver ticket which I can not change ! So now I need to plan my two full days if rains heavily!

    Thank you !

should I staying in montreux and do day trips to zermatt so in case the weather is not good I can just go to Lausanne? I was considering that option but I will eventually travel to Milano and then Lugano so I went ahead booked hotel in zermatt !

Any thought? I have not paid hotel yet ! But if I rebook my hotel it all will be more expensive! ( dates reaching montreux 10/6 ) I don’t have to go to Milan , and I can stay in montreu for 3-4 days and do day trips to zermatt if the weather is good . Then I travel from montreux straight to Lugano and if I want I can go to Milan from Lugano !

    Hi fionatravel,

You can definitely do a day trip to Zermatt from Montreux. I think this is a viable option if you are concerned about the weather. Having said that, if you do decide to spend a night in Zermatt and the weather becomes unfavourable, you do have the option to do day trips out of Zermatt too. I recommend a day trip to Brig.

    Regards,

    Anna
