Itinerary for Swiss honeymoon in May/June

Short summary – read this first

A couple from Singapore is planning their honeymoon trip for May-June and wants advice on their itinerary, primarily focused on Switzerland, with visits to Paris and Rome. They need guidance on transportation options, especially about using the Swiss Travel Pass and the best way to manage their travel between cities.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass for travel in Switzerland; it's valid on the Bernina Express from Tirano to Chur.
  • Flying from Zurich to Paris is faster than other options, so that's a good choice.
  • For safe travels to high-altitude locations like Jungfraujoch, consult your doctor first before the trip.
  • A base in towns like St. Moritz, Zermatt, Interlaken, or Lucerne is recommended for convenience during your stay.

    Hello,

My husband and I are from Singapore and will be going for our honeymoon trip in May – June 2022. It is our first time to Europe thus we would like to hear some advice/recommendations based on our itinerary. We are intending to spend most of our time in Switzerland but will like to visit Paris and Rome too. Just want to see if the plan is feasible and I have also got some questions on the transportation portion. Thank you in advance! 🙂

Day 1 – 19 May Reach Zurich, check-in hotel and rest for the day/night

Day 2 – 20 May Paris – Thinking to fly in from Zurich to Paris as it is faster or is there a better way?

    Day 3 – 21 May Paris

    Day 4 – 22 May Paris

Day 5 – 23 May Rome – Thinking of taking the high speed train from Paris to Rome. Is RailEurope a legit site to book the tickets?

    Day 6 – 24 May Rome

    Day 7 – 25 May Rome

Day 8 – 26 May Switzerland – How do we get from Rome to Tirano? Can we use Swiss pass to travel from Tirano, Italy to Chur via the Bernina Express? I know that Chur to Tirano is covered under Swiss pass since it starts in Switzerland, how about if we start the trip in Tirano? From Chur, how can we go straight to Lucerne? Is it far?

    Day 9 – 27 May Switzerland, LUCERNE

Day 10 – 28 May Switzerland, Interlaken & Lauterbrunnen – I will be about 23 weeks pregnant and wondering if it is safe for me to go to Jungfraujoch since it is at a high altitude?

    Day 11 – 29 May Switzerland, Montreux

    Day 12 – 30 May Switzerland, Zermatt

Day 13 – 31 May Switzerland, Glacier Express

Day 14 – 1 Jun Switzerland, St. Moritz

    Day 15 – 2 Jun Switzerland, Zurich

Day 16 – 3 Jun Switzerland, Departure back to Singapore from Zurich

For Switzerland, is it better to have a base hotel in one the towns? Or should we just travel and change hotel from one town to another?

Appreciate the advice and help! 🙂

    Hi joviiieee,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Based on your current plans, a Swiss Travel Pass might be suitable for the Swiss part of your honeymoon. For tickets to Paris and Rome, you can relevant details below:

Depending on your plans, you might also want to consider getting a multi-country railpass such as the Eurail Global Pass.

    To answer your specific questions:

Day 5 – RailEurope is a legit site. MySwissAlps has been working with them since 2005: http://www.myswissalps.com/aboutus/partners.

Day 8 – You can get to Tirano from Rome by train. I think you might need to switch train in Milan. The Swiss Travel Pass (STP) is valid on the Bernina Express from Tirano to Chur, so you won’t need additional tickets if you have the STP. From Chur/St Moritz, you can take a connection train to Lucerne via Zurich or take the Voralpen Express via St Gallen. Alternatively, if you want to avoid switchbacks, from Chur you can take the Glacier Express to Zermatt. Then from Zermatt to Montreux, Interlaken + Lauterbrunnen, then finally Lucerne. I think this is a more sensible route. You can use the SBB timetable to plan your journey.

Day 10 – Excursion to Jungfraujoch. You should consult with your doctor before travelling to high-altitude destinations. Based on my own experience, it should be ok but it’s good to ask for a professional opinion from a physician who knows your health history.

Suitable base towns – based on your current plans maybe St Moritz, Zermatt, Interlaken and Lucerne.

Hope this gives you some ideas on what railpass to get and how to organise your itinerary.

Let us know if you require more information.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Anna,

Thanks so much for the quick response!

Since I will be taking a train from Tirano to Chur via the Bernina Express, do you think it is worthwhile for us to travel from Chur to St. Moritz to take the Glacier Express to Zermatt? Not sure if we will be missing out any nice views if we take from Chur to Zermatt instead?

Is there a difference in the views if we were to take Glacier Express from Chur/St Moritz to Zermatt VS Zermatt to St Moritz/Chur?

How can we travel from Chur to St Moritz if we want to?

I also thought I could take from Tirano to St. Moritz straight, but also fear that we will miss out any really beautiful places? What would you suggest?

    Hi Joviiieee,

I don’t recommend to travel back from Chur to St. Moritz as that part is included in both the Bernina and Glacier Express. So you would see the same section 3 times 🙂

    Please see the maps:

The direction of travel does not matter for the views because it’s the same route. You’ll find tips on where to sit on the above linked pages.

I agree with Anna about the route: do the Bernina and Glacier Express first, and Lucerne last before ending in Zurich.

    Have fun!

It will make more sense if you travel from Singapore to Paris directly instead of Zurich when you are starting your journey

it is better to fly from Paris to Rome. There is high speed train from Rome to milan
